Hitchhikers were told, by the idiots, that there were going to be the
three spaceships, and that the idiots were sent off first, but had never
been able to contact either of the other two spaceships!!

So I took that to mean that the "useful" two thirds had just spun a
story to get rid of the "useless" third!! And the "useful" two thirds
were still at "Home"!!
