[Note: what's with the "aa"? From the FAQ:

{quote}

All subject threads with the letters aa in front of them are
intended for atheists only. If a theist should respond to one
of these threads and an atheist wants to respond to the theist
in return, the atheist should remove the aa to start a new thread.
If the theist wants to remove the aa first, that's okay, too.

{/quote} point 5 @ http://alt-atheism.org/atheism:faq ]

Many religions require or strongly encourage attendance at
a weekly meeting for the purpose of worship, fellowship and
instruction in the faith.

(Alternately, for self-abnegation, continued indoctrination,
and social control of the members.)

How do you use the time freed up by not attending?

Having given up religion in my early 20s, I have stopped attending
worship services. When I was a youngster, they took up a considerable
chunk of my leisure time. I was an altar server, then, at the
same time, a choir boy. As a result, I attended two services each
Sunday. When I was an altar boy, I also took my turn serving at
daily mass, and at weddings and funerals. In a busy week, I might
have participated in these to-dos up to a dozen times. At least
one got tipped for the weddings and funerals, and I did enjoy
singing. When I was in high school I switched to being a lay
reader, and I was down to one mass a week. In my college years
I would usually make it to mass on Sunday, or the Saturday vigil
mass, until I re-examined the idea of ghod, and gave up on it.

Various Sunday activities, since:

Working: in my last college semesters, I had to switch from a 9-5,
M-F schedule at my job to one that allowed me to take some day
classes. The manager at the store I worked for had a crew come in
several hours before we opened to change the weekly displays,
restock the shelves and generally straighten the shop after the
ravaging the Saturday customers gave it. We would get takeout
breakfast from the next-door McDonalds and transform the place,
while we pumped tunes from a boom box. We were all students
who needed the hours, and while we would have preferred to sleep
in, we couldn't afford to. We got huge amounts of work done,
before opening the store at noon.

At some later jobs I worked Sundays, but I'd rather have a
2-day weekend, unless there was overtime to be had.

Sleep: When I was younger, sleeping in on a Sunday was a delicious
pleasure, or, if Saturday night was a bit too celebratory, a
necessary restorative. I still sleep a little later than on
a weekday, or sneak in a nap later in the day.

Food: M-F, breakfast is often taken on the run, if at all. If I
manage a bowl of cereal with some fruit or juice before leaving
the house, or a bagel and schmear, I consider that a nutritional
victory. Sunday morning can mean a full breakfast. This morning
I have bacon in the fridge, and am deciding whether I'll make a
cheddar cheese omelet with English muffin or French Toast. I'll
put the kettle on in a moment and make some Irish Breakfast Tea.
In years past, I had a ritual of riding my bike 6-miles round
trip to a local donut shop for a pancake breakfast. I bought
the Sunday newspapers there, also, and brought them back to the
house for further perusal.

I also prep food for Sunday dinner, such as putting meat in
a marinade in the fridge.

Self-improvement: Besides picking up the papers (replaced nowadays
by reading the news on the web) I like to take in one or two of
the Sunday morning news/interview shows of the "Meet The Press"
or "Face the Nation" type. I've been a news and politics junky
since I was a teenager and have a political science degree, so
it is as much entertainment to me as an act of "good citizenship"
by staying informed.

Sport and recreation: Besides aforementioned bike riding, quiet
Sunday mornings are great for a walk, or a run if your young knees
can take that. I used to play softball or basketball in the
park when I was younger with a regular group of my buddies.

As a spectator, I like to watch my favorite teams play
on my day off. Some watch NFL football 10-hours straight
on a fall Sunday. I usually watch just one game. Sunday
afternoon baseball viewing is a tradition in my family.
Then there's basketball, ice hockey etc.

Entertainment: If you record TV during the week, Sundays
are perfect for catching up on "your shows."

Music: I have a fondness for Irish and other Celtic music.
A college-based non-profit station I listen to runs two
four-hour blocks of that programming on Sundays. I listen
to some of that, and record it for later listening.

Prior to the development to modern technology, people had
to make their own entertainment. People would come for
miles around to hear political speeches or religious sermons
by renowned orators and preachers. If you lived too far from
a town on the Vaudeville circuit, and the circus wasn't in town,
a revival tent meeting was great entertainment. People came
for the spectacle, as much as for the religious content. This
is why the Lyceum and Chautauqua movements were so popular. They
filled a void. People needed information and desired entertainment.
We have it at our fingertips, now. Opinions vary on its quality,
of course. Sturgeon's Law applies.

Your Sunday (or Saturday, or Friday, for those raised in other
traditions) favorites?

I went with the French Toast. I had a boule going stale,
so into the eggy-weggy it went.

Your Sunday (or Saturday, or Friday, for those raised in
other traditions) favorites?
To me, Sunday remains a holy day, however, *NOW*, it has
become a holy day that represents my freedom from the
coercive clutches of theist. A sort of recurrent celebration
of my own personal freedom. Something akin to what citizen
nationalists experience on their respective independence day
celebrations.

As i child, and under the threat of physical pain, i was
forced to attend Sunday mass. And in the very few instances
that i was truely sick, or able to feign sickness to a
convincing degree, i would be psychologically punished when
the family returned home late in the afternoon, with teasing
tales of "after church activities" for which i was excluded
-- for instance: restaurant, movies or some other fun
activity/entertainment.

Initially these tactics were highly successful, and i
succumbed to their coercive nature, but soon, an
intellectual revelation would cut through these emotional
weapons like a white-hot knife! And i realized, these
tactics were not the tactics of benevolents, no, they could
only be the tactics of the most insidious form of
malevolency that i had ever encountered in my short time on
this wretched earth. It is, at that very moment, bathed in
the luminosity of that intellectual revelation, that i
became mentally fortified against the psychological and
physical coercion of these devils. To imagine, that *I*
would allow *MY* mind (*MY FUCKING MIND*!) to be used as a
weapon against *ME*, would henceforth be unthinkable!

So, utilizing the power generated by the seething anger of
my intellectual revelation, i forged a defensive suit of
armour, and took into my right hand an offensive sword of
justice -- one that will be used to smite every obstacle and
every ravenous critter that dared to cross my path.

Therefore, it should be no surprise that Sunday is *MY* day
to celebrate *MY* metamorphosis from the fringes and shadows
of knowledge, into the glory of it's penetrating xrays. And
just as the caterpillar arises from a great slumber, and
breaks free of a confining cacoon to warm it's wings in
solar rays as preparation for the first flight, a flight
that shall leave in its wake every fowl creature of the low
lands -- the beauty, the *ABSOLUTE* beauty, encoded within
this moment of "transformational freedom", is strangely
intertwined with the reality that freedom does not come
without first paying a heavy price. And with that in mind, i
will leave you with a famous quote from a man who knew all
too well about the strange nature of freedom.

"The tree of liberty must be refreshed periodically with
the blood of patriots and tyrants, for these sacrifices
*ARE* its natural fertilizer!" -- Thomas Badass Jefferson.

Francis Farmer *WILL* have her revenge!

I'm not retired, but I'm no spring chicken. The first Sunday
masses I can remember being carted off to were in Latin.
The theists are sure we'll crack and get religious at
the end of it all. If I start acting like that, it will be
a sign of the onset of dementia.

I sleep in, like I've done for the past 45 years or so, ever since I
ditched going to church.

Also, I've retired two years ago and I sleep 'till noon pretty much
every day.

Well he's a pure troll for crashing a thread marked "aa,"
per the FAQ. I agree with your post, but the point is
to encourage atheists to discuss something of interest
to us, not to dispute with these ijits.

I started a second thread to respond to the likes of Andrew.

I watched the World Series game* last night, which had the
wrong result (I'm pulling for Houston) but was an exciting contest.
a no-hitter broken up by a run, and a 3-run blast late. All
tied, 2-2, so at least two more games set.

We're going to get hit hard by rain and wind today. At least
it isn't snowing, yet. I've got waffles, smoked turkey bacon
and eggs in the fridge, the makings for pizza at lunchtime,
and pork chops are marinating for grilling or broiling tonight.

This morning I'm replaying my favorite NHL team's victory
from last night. I'm giving the NFL a skip today. My lousy
team has the bye scheduled this week, for which mercy I am
grateful - to the schedulers.

There may be a nap on the agenda for this afternoon.

I will, of course, check in on a.a, if only to see which Christian
trolls are breaking their sabbath by posting here. :)

I'm watching Sunday morning news and comment. Senator McCain has
finally succumbed to brain cancer. After the ordeal of being a PoW
making it to 82 is actually impressive. I never supported him for
President, because I disagreed with him on various points of policy,
but he had integrity lacking in certain prominent politicians.

I think I'll make some bacon, eggs and a pot of tea, and enjoy
not going to church.

I find it fascinating how the "base" has thrown a war hero under
the bus and stomped on his reputation. Drumph says he likes "the

disrespecting all POWs and veterans alike. It's a shame what ths

McCain was adjudged a RINO (Republican In Name Only) long
ago. he voted against Obamacare repeal. He made common cause
with WI Senator Russ Feingold on their First Amendment Repeal Act
(aka "campaign finance reform.") He wasn't a dependable vote on
"social issues." Neither would another Arizona Senator, were
he the incumbent, the late Barry Goldwater, be one.

I disassociated myself from the GOP, in favor of the Libertarians,
in my college days, after Jimmy Carter was elected, about the
same time I dropped religion. The social issues-motivated Reagan
supporters were religion addicts, though they were only a part of
his winning 1980 coalition. They are now the core of Republican
activism, with those concerned about economic policy having to
at least fake sympathy for their concerns or lose out on nominations.
Neo-con interventionist "National Greatness" types + restrictionists
opposed to trade and/or immigration + drug warriors + those "social
issues" conservatives" trying to impose their religious dogmason
the rest of us - this is the GOP in the Trump Era. It'd be only
slightly less creepy with a Pres Cruz or Pence. These aren't
"limited government" people, except when we are discussing taxes.

The Dems are statists, also, leaving neither of the two official
parties acceptable.

It's a beautiful day, there's cold beer in the fridge,
baseball on the TV, and nobody telling me what to do
for at least the next 20 hours. That's not so bad.

I think I'll make some bacon, eggs and a pot of tea, and enjoy
not going to church.
You just brought a smile to satan's face.
You just violated the charter, again. Which is like
saying you took the last donut.

[Note: what's with the "aa"? From the FAQ:

{quote}

Even if this wasn't a closed thread, banging on about your
religion's ghod of evil is proselytizing, and also off-charter.

Fuck off, Weber.

The aa before a thread title means that it's what is known as
a 'party thread'. That means the thread is for atheists only.
Of course, the trolls ignore this.

Non-troll theists can comment in the parallel thread NOT marked a.a.
Not you, though, since you are a proselytizing troll.

Back to the discussion.

We have the first Sunday of the National Football League, and
a full slate of games with 1 pm EDT kickoffs, today. That's
11 a.m MDT and 10 a.m. PDT, so "Sunday morning" for half the
country, at least by geography. Pre-game shows start at least
an hour earlier. Sitting on the couch in sweats or PJs and
watching sports beats grovelling in front of an altar all hollow.

I will probably record the NY Giants football v Jacksonville,
and watch the Mets play baseball. DeGrom is pitching.

Sundays aren't much of a day of rest if you can't lounge around
and take it easy.

I didn't ask myself to leave. It's terrible that you are unable to engage in
discussion with those that know differently than you.

You don't have that authority to declare that condition. That just openly means
you cannot conduct a discussion to what others see and believe. How sad of you.

What's better than going to Mass first and then watching a game? God gave us
the day off before football and baseball. It doesn't cost you the lost of your
soul to miss a game, but it dies to miss Mass.

Sleeping in first is better. Waking up without an alarm clock.
Eating a leisurely breakfast without worrying about any "pre-worship
fast." [We did pre-communion fasting when I was a kid. I gather that's
been relaxed.] Staying indoors if it is raining or snowing too much.
Wearing grungy (but clean!) clothing, `cause it's comfy.

of your soul to miss a game, but it dies to miss Mass.
"Souls" is a mental construct, a concept, that analogizes
our minds. It isn't a thing, either physical or "spiritual," (sic)
that exists independently of the human body.

It's also a very cool form of music.

Worship costs one time, about an hour + travel time for the
Catholic Sunday liturgy with homily, plus consequent loss
of dignity, from the groveling to the imaginary. Putting up
with that again would take years off my life. (My actual life,
not some imaginary "afterlife.")

Mind you, some of the music is good, but I can't stand the lyrics.
Even the Latin hymns and chants are annoying, when they are sometimes
used. After two years of high school Latin and years as an altar
and choir boy, I'm familiar with their meaning, so I can't just listen
to it as if it were "hey nonny nonny." That "Ray Repp and after, guitar
mass" music is dreadful, though.

It's also the one "animation" that gives you purpose that no other living thing
possesses - the knowledge of God and the ability to respond to God. And all
mankind is driven to a preference of good over evil, right over wrong, love over
hate.

No. I haven't been to Louisiana in over 40 years.
Post by Oko Tillo
(and I hope while you were there you showed the Fathers a nice
collection of the posts he puts up here. You know, show them his
actual abusive and insulting face, and not the deceiver's face he
puts on there. Maybe put a nice sampling of his posts in the church
newsletter while you're at it)
I told Earl, in the non-party version of this thread, that I'll
stay out of his church if he'll stop posting here. I'm unlikely
to be invited to any weddings in Baton Rouge, nor attend any
funerals there, which are the only reasons I'd darken a church
door - well, that and the singed fingers! :)
Well, you could always turn back to God.

As for exposing Earl's history here?

Yes. And tell him to rotate those smooth criminals _exactly_
thirteen times. And when he's finished, tell him to rotate
them another 13 revolutions. Not because it would enlighten
him... but because it would be funny as hell. >:-)

Worship costs one time, about an hour + travel time for the
Catholic Sunday liturgy with homily, plus consequent loss
of dignity, from the groveling to the imaginary. Putting up
with that again would take years off my life. (My actual life,
not some imaginary "afterlife.")
Like I said, last thing is your purpose in life.
It's my life, my purpose, and no business of yours, troll.
Then stay out of Church and leave my worship of God alone.
KEVROB!!! Did you barge into Duke's Church and make a scene?
Uncool, dude! Uncool!
No, he is still inviting satan to come into his own house.

It's also the one "animation" that gives you purpose that no other living thing
possesses - the knowledge of God and the ability to respond to God. And all
mankind is driven to a preference of good over evil, right over wrong, love over
hate.
_________________

All of that love over hate, good over evil stuff, is simply logic and empathy that does not require a God.

There are many evils that have been identified through that process and banned by law because life is better, and society is better for so doing.

Since God waited so long before deciding to make its presence known and there were moral codes that existed before that, are you claiming that nobody recognized that evil should be disallowed?
You think nobody figured out that murder, rape, robbery, and theft were wrong?

Non-troll theists can comment in the parallel thread NOT marked a.a.
Not you, though, since you are a proselytizing troll.
You don't have that authority to declare that condition. That just openly means
you cannot conduct a discussion to what others see and believe. How sad of you.
How completely and utterly dishonest of you. Such discussions happen all the time. But not with you as you make that impossible.

Then you can bond with those that hate the Flag.
And you never lie on the NG, right? You're the biggest disgrace to the flag there could ever be. You oppose religious freedom.

I will probably record the NY Giants football v Jacksonville,
and watch the Mets play baseball. DeGrom is pitching.
Sundays aren't much of a day of rest if you can't lounge around
and take it easy.
What's better than going to Mass first and then watching a game?
Not going to mass and watching 2 games.

the day off before football and baseball. It doesn't cost you the lost of your
soul to miss a game, but it dies to miss Mass.

Respect for the Flag of the USofA is not religion. It's lacking in those that
have no purpose but theirs and theirs alone.

The "game" is put on for our enjoyment. Pay the players $1 a game and let her

Your anger is a function of your lack of purpose, a lack of recognition that man
is built to honor and respond to our creator.

Remember, we too watch the game and it is our desire that we give honor to our
God and to our country. It's ours too.

anger you when you are told you aren't perfect and make mistakes all over the place. Narcissists also have no empathy for other people. You only love
yourself and think others are just a reflection of you. Therefore when one of your reflections of yourself refuses to agree with you, like ArtieJoe, you

religion's ghod of evil is proselytizing, and also off-charter.
I'm just trying to help you.
Nah. You just want to upset people and get them angry enough to respond to you which is what you want - attention.
What you claim as yours is not. It's mine too.
And you can't understand why no one agrees with you, believes you are a giggling loon and both laughs at you and pities you, failed narcissist.

You just brought a smile to satan's face.
You just violated the charter, again. Which is like
saying you took the last donut.

This is an open discussion.
Not if it has an aa before the thread title.
That too. Go hide someplace and leave me to open discussion.

Oh, I know why atheist losers disagree with me. Are you that nuts? I'm
trying to do you a favor, or at least get yourself to do a favor for yourself,
but you rather be damned, whatever that means to a fallen away Jewess.

You can spit at God if you wish. It's your funeral. But maybe there are others

I was a theist until I read aa, and realized how stupid
theists are and how smart atheists are. I realized that
believers practice much assholiness and eat shit pizzas.

Thanks, Earl and CrazyJoe.

Many religions require or strongly encourage attendance at

How do you use the time freed up by not attending?
I'm watching Sunday morning news and comment. Senator McCain has
finally succumbed to brain cancer. After the ordeal of being a PoW

but he had integrity lacking in certain prominent politicians.

It'd be more spot on if Earl were slow-barbecued or smoked,
cubed and tossed in a gumbo pot. Lots of chilis.

Many religions require or strongly encourage attendance at
a weekly meeting for the purpose of worship, fellowship and
instruction in the faith.
(Alternately, for self-abnegation, continued indoctrination,
and social control of the members.)
How do you use the time freed up by not attending?
I'm watching Sunday morning news and comment. Senator McCain has
finally succumbed to brain cancer. After the ordeal of being a PoW
making it to 82 is actually impressive. I never supported him for
President, because I disagreed with him on various points of policy,
but he had integrity lacking in certain prominent politicians.
I think I'll make some bacon, eggs and a pot of tea, and enjoy
not going to church.
You just brought a smile to satan's face.
As it is one of your pixie, why would you rant against that?

I sleep in, like I've done for the past 45 years or so, ever since I ditched going to church.
Also, I've retired two years ago and I sleep 'till noon pretty much every day.
Fuck Sundays, fuck work, fuck mornings!
Now you have time to prepare for --> the final Day.
-
- Lying theist....no one, including the most faithful theists, will have to prepare anything at the

Oh but you are mistaken. For it is written.
"It is appointed unto men once to
die, but after this the judgment."
~ Hebrews 9:27
It is also written "Follow the Yellow Brick Road."

Just as meaningful as your quote. Just because something is written, does not make it true. If it's written in the Bible there's a ver4y good chance it's false like so much of the bible is.

Yet is it not also written:

similarly the embodied soul passes into another body at death.
The wise man does not get deluded & bewildered with such a change."

NOT in an aa thread. If theists invade the thread, atheists are either
supposed to ignore them or start a new thread without the aa in front
of the title.

No, we are merely giving our opinions. Who knows what horrors
you would commit without your monster god to scare the shit
out of you? But I can understand you feeling that way about
our opinions, since you are a major narcissist. Anyone who
doesn't agree with you, you call a liar. That is definitely
a narcissistic interpretation of the word liar. It isn't
one you'll find in any dictionary or thesaurus.

I just treat it like another Saturday. Two days of the week where I do whatever I feel like.
That could be anything from watching great movies to listening to music, to fixing a plumbing problem. Just installed a motion detector light for our driveway.

It depends on what's needed sometimes. Other times it depends on what I feel like.

Coming here is a great stress reliever. I get so many laughs from the stupidity of the theists trying to defend the indefensible and the lengths they will go to.
Best of all they still haven't caught on that NOTHING they ever try ever works.

Sex is also a good Sunday morning activity. Way better than church. But what isn't?

Oops. My bad. O:-)

From now on I'll let Mickey and Cloud feed the canines.

PS: You two mind your fingers. Those canines are snappy today.

All subject threads with the letters aa in front of them are
intended for atheists only. If a theist should respond to one
of these threads and an atheist wants to respond to the theist
in return, the atheist should remove the aa to start a new thread.
If the theist wants to remove the aa first, that's okay, too.

Haahaahaa. No you don't. Caring for others is a person of God trait, not a
pumpkin worshipper like you.
