A Michigan woman who sacrificed the chance to prolong her life
in order to give birth to her sixth child died early Saturday,
her husband said.

Nick DeKlyen told The Associated Press that his wife, Carrie
DeKlyen, died surrounded by family at University of Michigan
Hospital in Ann Arbor.

He said among his last words to her were, "I'll see you in
Heaven."

"We stayed by her until she took her last breath," Nick DeKlyen
said. "It's in God's hands now."

Doctors removed Carrie DeKlyen's feeding and breathing tubes on
Thursday, a day after she gave birth to her daughter Life Lynn
DeKlyen. The mother chose to forgo chemotherapy to treat her
brain cancer, since it would have meant ending her pregnancy.

Life Lynn was born prematurely, at 24 weeks and five days into
the pregnancy and weighing 1 pound, four ounces (567 grams).
Nick DeKlyen said his daughter is doing better than expected in
neonatal intensive care, gaining weight and "almost breathing on
her own."

"She's going to be fine," he said. "She's going to be here for 4
or 5 months, but we expect her to be a healthy baby. ... The
doctor just said the timing (of the birth) couldn't have been
more perfect."

The couple, who are from the western Michigan city of Wyoming,
have five other kids who range in age from 2 to 18 years old.
Nick DeKlyen said the family is strong in its Christian faith.

"My wife loves the Lord and she loves her children more than
anything," he said Friday.

"It's painful," he added. "But this is what she wanted. She
wanted to protect this child."

Since Carrie DeKlyen's cancer diagnosis in April, the family has
been sharing updates about her and her pregnancy on the Facebook
page Cure 4 Carrie . Posted on the page Saturday was a reference
to a Bible verse, John 15:13, which reads: "Greater love has no
one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends."

She has the real leader of the family - the husband. An animal like you likely
would have chosen love of self instead of others, and died anyway.

No husband is the leader of any family. She should've done the right
thing and aborted the filthy fetus.
The stupid husband will probably remarry some bitch with kids and make
the lives of the six kids even worse.

There is no hell, Earl. Too bad that you're so frightened of something that
doesn't exist. But I know that you just love the idea of a possible baby being chosen over the life of a woman/mother of other kids.

Oh, I'm guessing that a God who sits back and does nothing
while two out of every three zygotes spontaneously abort,
no human involvement, just God's design -- I'm guessing
such a God isn't going to be upset when man artificially
copies God's own natural ways.

And let us never forget the ONLY mention of abortion in the bible--the absolute requirement that a woman suspected of adultery drink an abortificent.

So the Abrahamic god, is definitely pro-abortion.

Thank you for once again proving that Roman Catholicism is a religion of
hatred that controls its followers through fear of a non-existent hell.
And thanks for also proving that the Church despises women. If you weren't
a Catholic, you'd probably be a Southern Baptist.

No, NO way on both comments.

What a louse a woman would be to sacrifice her last child for "maybe" being
cured of cancer. A real lack of morality.

Because any god would be as vicious and spiteful as you are. Jesus never

If she had, she would still die but be sent to the fires of hell instead.
Because any god would be as vicious and spiteful as you are. Jesus never
mentionned abortion, the Law doesn't equate abortion to murder.
Butchering another human life for one's comfort and convenience can only be
rewarded by the fires of hell.
How pharisee of you.
God has an infinite supply of passports to the fires of hell for preborn baby
killers. Not even the wildest animals make such a decision. Although a few
will eat their young, and some animals will actually engage in queer sex. But
they don't know better. It's their nature.

A human being, if that's what your are, has no excuse.

Or are we supposed to believe there were no

Sometimes they have very good mothers who are placed in terrible predictaments.

Since humans can't know everything another human has to cope with, that would
explain the whole 'Judge not....' thing.

Nothing is so bad that you deliberately allocate yourself to the fires of hell.
Of course, our loving God understands the pain and anguish of one dying. How
much greater is the one that gives another life at one's own demise.

That's exactly what Jesus did on the cross. And atheists hate him for it

The Jewish belief is the soul enters the body with the first breath and leaves
with the last: unborn children are potential humans and receive special
consideration, but they aren't ensouled humans so their deaths are not homicide.

California law is similiar. What a woman does to her pregnancy it not a
homicide, but inducing a miscarriage by attacking a pregnant woman is a separate
crime. Once the baby is out of the vagina and depends on its own lungs, it's
under the full protection of the state.

No husband is the leader of any family. She should've done the right
thing and aborted the filthy fetus.
And here I thought being pro-choice meant leaving the decision to the mother to
abort or carry without interference in her decision, either way by others.
Post by a322x1n
The stupid husband will probably remarry some bitch with kids and make
the lives of the six kids even worse.
Given the froup's bile at this acknowledged christian family, I do wonder how
much of this is hatred at being christian rather than an expression of being
anti-choice pro-death. The parents were faced with a difficult choice, and it
could've been just as difficult for an atheist family. Unlike you not all
atheists think only prolonging their own life no matter what it costs others.

Pat Tillman is from this county; he attended high school not far from from where
I grew up. Without commenting on his decision to join the Army, putting himself
at risk for the sake of rest of us, I'm sad that he was killed. He was also an
atheist and by all reports a wise and thoughtful young man. He left behind a
wife; I don't know if she has remarried some bastard with kids.

In the wide world, atheists are morally on par with everyone else.

In alt.atheism.....well......

Sometimes the real world just sucks. No good decisions. I hope the best for
those forced to choose the least crappy outcome.

Also abortion is not a christian vs atheist battle.

And here I thought being pro-choice meant leaving the decision to the mother to
abort or carry without interference in her decision, either way by others.
And religious nuts are doing injustice to the 5 children....
So you would have been okay with these events if only they had been atheists.
Reasons and deep consider for the whole situation....not religious dogma which is of paganism origin, Siri!!!!!!!!!!

If your reasons and appropriate action coincide with the religious teaching, so be it. However, this is not the case.

Pat Tillman is from this county; he attended high school not far from from where
So, you see atheists are people with responsible attitudes in lives.
In the wide world, atheists are morally on par with everyone else.
No...atheism subscribe to responsible humanism, apart from the above.

Sometimes the real world just sucks. No good decisions. I hope the best for
those forced to choose the least crappy outcome.
That is where we find common sense at a work. This world progresses not based on religious stupidity, for sure!!!!
Post by Siri Cruise
Also abortion is not a christian vs atheist battle.
I thought this world has been given the free choice for it inhabitants???

If not, you need a forceful government like China to advise its population that one child policy is good for economy and the country...well, until a revision is needed.

The stupid husband will probably remarry some bitch with kids and make
the lives of the six kids even worse.
Given the froup's bile at this acknowledged christian family, I do wonder how
much of this is hatred at being christian
I'd be against anyone of any religion doing this. But I never hear about anybody but Christians doing stupid shit like this or allowing their children to die of esily curable diseases by refusing to take them to the doctor.

I've never understood this. They think everything they have came from their god, which includes our brains which are able to learn how to be a doctor. So doctors come from god, which means going to a doctor is taking advantage of what their god provided.

It's like that old flood story: An elderly woman is stranded on her roof by a flood. First, a guy with a rowboat comes by and she rejects his help by saying "god will save me". Then the police come by with a motorboat and again she rejects their help. Sadly, she dies. When she reaches heaven, she bitches at god for not rescuing her and he asks her what the fuck she's talking about--didn't he send her 2 boats to save her.

It was very bad and very stupid of her. This shows how religion can murder
one person for the possibility of another. And leave six children without a mother. I bet her husband will remarry in about a year and help make more kids he probably can't afford.

The lady had a aggressive brain cancer. There is no cure at this
time.

For glioblastoma, the survival rates are:

One year: 39.3%
Two years: 16.9%
Three years: 9.9%
Four years: 7.0%
Five years: 5.5%
Ten years: 2.9%

Not a choice I'd like to have to make religion or no religion.

The post suggests she would've died soon anyway. Some brain cancers are
notoriously hard to treat. That means she had to choose a little more life for
herself or another new life. I didn't realise atheists always clung to their own
lives no matter what, and never accepted death for the sake of another.

I wonder why I thought of Pat Tillman?

She could have spent that time building up memories with her 5 children, preparing them for the fact that she was going to die, but that she was fighting as hard as she could to beat the cancer so she could stay with them.

She was given a terrible choice. She didn't need me to moralise on her decision.
You don't have to be a christian to 'pray' for them. You can be sympathetic,
support whatever they have to decide and deal with, hope their future will be
better even if you don't know any instrumentality that will make it better.

I'm sad for anyone who is killed.

Some years ago I read an article about late term abortions when the baby's brain
is outside the skull. The baby's death is certain, but to protect the mother,
the doctor still had to kill the baby. To help with their grief, the parents
dressed the corpse, gave it a cap to hide its skull, and took baby pictures
before burial. And tiny little coffins. I can't understand a god that would hate
parents that have to go through that.

Exactly. They are ALL volunteers. Tillman was definitely a hero, but no more so for giving up money to serve.

Of course, the Bush Administration did everything they could to exploit his death, even though he was killed by friendly fire and hated Bush for starting the war.

The point is that if the mother hadn't chosen to suicide, none of these expenses would ever have been necessary. She could have gotten her chemo, and gotten pregnant again when she went into remission. Instead of abandoning her other 5 children by suiciding.

The trouble is, she has insufficient faith....prayer is supposed to get rid of her sickness!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If the family was obeying ACA, their insurer will pay all the medical bills; the
insurer will try to fund themselves by distributing their costs amongst clients.

I'm guessing you would have prefered she killed the baby by having an

I posted earlier the estimate of between $1 and $2 million in neonatal
intensive care for the kid's projected stay of 4 to 6 weeks in it. It
is a pretty sure bet that the grieving father does not have that kind
of scratch, so the answer to the OP's question about public money is
"yes," unless you are about to step up to the plate with the cash. We
shall all thank you for it.

Strange that a Liberal is OK with a 16 year old making a choice to kill
a human life in their uterus.... but NOT OK with that same 16 year old
making the choice to have sex and put a human life inside that same uterus.

To have sex with someone and get pregnant with someone over 18 is
statutory rape (to protect the under 18 persons) but to kill a human
life inside the uterus the under 18 person is NOT protected from that
bad Liberal decision? Both decisions will change a life irreparably.
They seem to have equal weight.

Nick DeKlyen told The Associated Press that his wife, Carrie

"We stayed by her until she took her last breath," Nick DeKlyen

Doctors removed Carrie DeKlyen's feeding and breathing tubes on
Thursday, a day after she gave birth to her daughter Life Lynn
DeKlyen. The mother chose to forgo chemotherapy to treat her
brain cancer, since it would have meant ending her pregnancy.
Life Lynn was born prematurely, at 24 weeks and five days into

I wonder who is paying the bills for this litter? Is public money

I'm guessing you would have prefered she killed the baby by having an
abortion. Such is the "logic" of "pro-choice"ers.
I leave whatever she does to her. I am commenting on the payment of
the expenses involved and the insanity of having five children.
That isn't a family - it's a litter.
What happened to *choice* ?
What happened to freedom of speech?
If you believe in choice then you are OK with what ever her decision...

Obviously you don't believe in choice and that was just a scam to allow
abortion rather than accepting someone making a choice you don't agree
with.

Choice was yet another Liberal scam so that you could later disapprove
of anyone who's "choice" wasn't the same as yours.

Liberals keep showing us that they don't believe what they tell us.

What you really believe is that a woman has a choice as long as it
doesn't conflict with your choice. If it was OK for any choice, you
would have no opinion.

Obviously you don't believe in choice and that was just a scam to allow
abortion rather than accepting someone making a choice you don't agree
with.
Why obviously? She doesn't need my permission or my approval. My
comment was directed at her total number of littermates and not any
method she may or may not use to limit that number.

Choice was yet another Liberal scam so that you could later disapprove
of anyone who's "choice" wasn't the same as yours.
I could not care less what her choice is as long as she is free to
make it. My approval or disapproval is irrelevant. The choice is
hers to make and none of my business.
Post by #BeamMeUpScotty
Liberals keep showing us that they don't believe what they tell us.
If you are talking about me you obviously have never read any of my
posts or my signature. I support the freedom of choice for a pregnant
woman without reservation and oppose the presence of any religion or
religious influence of any kind in public.

doesn't conflict with your choice.
Just what part of "I don't care" do you fail to understand? I am not
addressing and have not addressed the decision to have an abortion or
not to have an abortion because as long as she has the option what she
does is none of my business and I really don't care what she decided.
In fact, don't bother to even tell me.

I am addressing her failure to limit the number of children she has to
a more reasonable number by whatever method she chooses. Her failure
to prevent those pregnancies I consider excess. What she does after
she is pregnant is her business.

That is utter dreck. It is always proper to have an opinion about

agree with it.

Considering that we (either as taxpayers or as insurance customers)
are _already_ obligated to pay between $1 and $2 million for the
sprog, the complications to a $160 abortion* (much more rare than
those of $20,000 live births) would have to be real humdingers to come
to half the price. But every invasive procedure does have possible
complications.

Just looking at the worst-case scenario, maternal death, Reuters
reports:
https://www.reuters.com/article/us-abortion/abortion-safer-than-giving-birth-study-idUSTRE80M2BS20120123

Maternal death following live birth: 1 out of ~11,000 births.
Maternal death following abortions: 1 out of ~167,000 abortions.

Those seeking to do away with legal abortions are apparently unruffled
by an increase in the death rate of young women.

__________
* Abortion is used here to refer only to _legal_ ones performed by
qualified practitioners. The illegal sort not only cost more (but
their costs are covered by neither insurance nor medicare, at least
not until the moribund mom is hauled into the ER for a futile effort)
but have a much higher infection and death rate (the known outcome of
using recycled coat hangers).

If god steps forward to pay the bills, I am quite willing to let god
have the credit for doing the decent thing, particularly as the sprog
was hatched in his name. But if people must pay those bills, where is
the morality of those god botherers inflicting those bills upon
others?

I'm sure I can find others (if I was motivated to research) but the first that
comes to mind is Ayn Rand. Atheist. Who got social security to help pay for her
lung cancer. After a lifetime of cigarette smoking. And she had no right to the
money under her own labour, but got it as a survivor of her husband who had paid
in.

What fails to motivate me is the belief that atheists in general are no worse,
or better, than any other class. Ayn Rand and alt.atheism being atypical.

Which made her eligible under the law. Argue with the law, not the

as those who wrote the law intended.

Post by Didn't Know When To Stop!

I wonder who is paying the bills for this litter? Is public money
involved anywhere?
I'm guessing you would have prefered she killed the baby by having an
abortion. Such is the "logic" of "pro-choice"ers.
I leave whatever she does to her. I am commenting on the payment of
the expenses involved and the insanity of having five children.
And if she chose abortion, would you be whining about any costs
incurred if something went wrong?
Abortion is a simple procedure and seldom gores 'wrong' but if there
is a problem it would be treated like any other medical expense.
You didn't answer the question.
What part of "if there is a problem it would be treated like any other
medical expense." did you fail to grasp?

Any such expenses would be far less than continued medical support for
a period of time for any reason or for the expenses involved with a
normal delivery.

BTW, the expenses I was addressing was the expenses that are ongoing
with the support of five or more kids, not the medical expenses
involved here which are relatively trivial.

That isn't a family - it's a litter.
Glad you admit you think so little of human life. It says all we need
to know about you.
Usually families of that size are on some kind of government support.
Hmm, I sense some elitism in your reply and likely some racism as
well.
Amusing since I have no clue as to what race is involved (do you?) and
you don't know what my race is. As far as elitism is involved I
generally pay my own way and have little sympathy for anyone who
deliberately follows a course of action which he knows he cannot
afford on his own. Call that what you will - I am aware it is counter
to most liberal positions and I don't care. I am not a liberal.

Before you blow a gasket note I said "deliberately follows a course of
action". Nothing was said about any unexpected misfortune.

Some of the Republican positions I find disgusting and abhorrent.
Most of the Democratic positions I find terrifying.

I am not conservative so much as a rabid anti-liberal.

Any day now I expect some liberal to demand a government
guaranteed above average income for every person.
