Discussion:
Why is there such widespread public opposition to science and scientific reasoning in the United States, the world leader in every major branch of science?

This question was asked by Jared Diamond in edge.org. No answer was given.

Is it partially because of the influence of religion? Are atheists, in general, more scientifically literate?

I would guess that the answer to both questions is yes.

If the question was answered in other places, I wouldn’t need to ask it here.

I asked if atheists are generally more scientifically literate. I never made any claims about myself.

America is the richest and most powerful nation in the world. Unfortunately it is lead by a scientifically illiterate populist who appeals to man’s negative thoughts and emotions. He creates fear of other races, and blames other countries for USA’s problems. Under Trump, USA has given up moral leadership of the world.

The conservatives generally care less about the long term damage to the environment that their economic policy causes. Trump has slashed corporate taxes to give a short term boost to the economy. His tariffs and sanctions are unethical and against the interests of the global economy.

Conservatives rely more on religion and less on science, as compared to liberals. All they care about is making a quick buck.

For sustainable economic growth, we must protect the earth.

No. They're just doing the same thing the Jews did when many of them
came to the US and eventually became citizens. They're seeing to it
that their kids get a good education and find good jobs. And, as was
the case with the Jews, many of the Asian immigrants already had
excellent educations but not all did.

No. It's because science can't answer the question of philosophy, and
the question of God is a philosophical question that has nothing to do
with physical science. The scientific answer of God would be the same as
the scientific answer of Marxism. It's an abuse of human knowledge and
common logic.

This question was asked by Jared Diamond in edge.org. No answer was given.
Is it partially because of the influence of religion? Are atheists,
in general, more scientifically literate?
I would guess that the answer to both questions is yes.
No. It's because science can't answer the question of philosophy,
and the question of God is a philosophical question that has nothing
to do with physical science. The scientific answer of God would be
the same as the scientific answer of Marxism. It's an abuse of human
knowledge and common logic.
You abuse human knowledge and common logic in every one of your posts.
You sound desperate.

Are you sure you aren't insane yourself?
We are sure that you're insane. See the poll.
What poll? There can be no poll in usenet.
The poll asking if people think you're insane. Several agreed that you're
completely bonkers.
That doesn't prove anything. In fact, I would be greatly disappointed if
they spoke differently.

nothing to do with physical science. The scientific answer of God
would be the same as the scientific answer of Marxism. It's an
abuse of human knowledge and common logic.

Are you sure you aren't insane yourself?
We are sure that you're insane. See the poll.
What poll? There can be no poll in usenet.
The poll asking if people think you're insane. Several agreed that
you're completely bonkers.
Add my vote to theirs--I have had the little turdsucker killfiled for
months, and I have mostly given up reading anything addressed to him as
an utter waste of time.
Your vote makes it about 10 who agree that he's insane and NONE who think
he's sane. Not even one of the other theist trolls said he's sane.
There was one vote for him being a Poe.
I supposed he's a Poe, but may still also be nuts:.
insanity compelling him to post like a Poe.

This question was asked by Jared Diamond in edge.org. No
answer was given.
Is it partially because of the influence of religion? Are atheists,
in general, more scientifically literate?
I would guess that the answer to both questions is yes.

If that were true, the thousands of years we have been under the rule

religious bullshit aside, religion is just another point of contention

The fault of religion isn't the fault of philosophy or the fault of the
teaching of God. It's the fault of the fallen men. Religion is God's
spiritual and philosophical teaching to teach us the knowledge of truth.
It should be spiritually pure and philosophically truthful. It should
have nothing to do with dirty political struggle. The separation of
church and state should work on both sides. Politics should leave
religion alone also.

I absolutely agree with that last. No special breaks for religions,
no laws, special zoning restrictions, no ten commandments in/on public
buildings, no proselytizing, no prayers in government, no church bells
or calls to prayer, no special restrictions placed on free-speech with
regards to religion, etc. etc. etc..

Now you are being political by interfering with legitimate religious

religious practice has nothing to do with politics, then religious
practice can happen anywhere according to people's choice.

SEE! exactly the sort of thing I'm railing against! You immediately
start off assuming that everyone has a god simply because you are
programmed to think that there's this omniscient being hanging around.

I don't respect people who claim they have the fast track to a god I
don't believe in. I don't respect people that think god makes them
better than I am. I don't respect people who are gullible, or
fearful, insecure, stupid, etc., enough to be sucked in by religion,

No special breaks for religions. Stupidity should not be rewarded!

that has nothing to do with physical science. The scientific
answer of God would be the same as the scientific answer of
Marxism. It's an abuse of human knowledge and common logic.
If that were true, the thousands of years we have been under the
rule or religion should make this world a utopia. All the good
sounding religious bullshit aside, religion is just another point
of contention among us.
The fault of religion isn't the fault of philosophy or the fault of
the teaching of God. It's the fault of the fallen men. Religion is
God's spiritual and philosophical teaching to teach us the
knowledge of truth. It should be spiritually pure and
philosophically truthful. It should have nothing to do with dirty
political struggle. The separation of church and state should work
on both sides. Politics should leave religion alone also.
I absolutely agree with that last. No special breaks for religions,
no laws, special zoning restrictions, no ten commandments in/on
public buildings, no proselytizing, no prayers in government, no
church bells or calls to prayer, no special restrictions placed on
free-speech with regards to religion, etc. etc. etc..
Now you are being political by interfering with legitimate religious
practice like prayer in schools or public space. If you agree that
religious practice has nothing to do with politics, then religious
practice can happen anywhere according to people's choice.
Pray all you want but if it is organized, vocal, held in a public
school and others must be exposed to your religion I disagree. Ditto
prayers in Congress or legislatures around the country.
Why is that? Why must you be so intolerant? Prayer is a privilege. You
should ask to be allowed to join the prayer instead.
It is religious nonsense. Those folks are there to do a job, not
waste their time praying to gods, or broadcasting their tomfoolery.
That would be an entirely different issue. I'm talking about the genuine
religious practice for our spiritual betterment. It's no different from
people exercising in the park for their physical betterment.
As long as it doesn't affect me in any way I couldn't care less. The
problem is they seem to think that they have a duty to change my life
to suit their god.
That would be entirely your misunderstanding. It's not their god. God is
everyone's God. Just because you don't worship God like a Christian or a
Muslim doesn't mean you don't worship God just as the way you are even
as an atheist. Simply by respecting them, you are actually respecting
yourself.
SEE! exactly the sort of thing I'm railing against!
Now you fall back to become political. From the view of philosophy,
everybody has to have a god or God regardless they like it or not.
Therefore, the God belief is just like the basic human rights for food
and water, it should be something respected by everyone.

I would guess that the answer to
both questions is yes.
No. It's because science can't
answer the question of philosophy,
and the question of God is a
philosophical question that has
nothing to do with physical
science. The scientific answer of
God would be the same as the
scientific answer of Marxism. It's
an abuse of human knowledge and
common logic.
If that were true, the thousands of
years we have been under the rule or
religion should make this world a
utopia. All the good sounding
religious bullshit aside, religion
is just another point of contention
among us.
The fault of religion isn't the fault
of philosophy or the fault of the
teaching of God. It's the fault of the
fallen men. Religion is God's
spiritual and philosophical teaching to
teach us the knowledge of truth. It
should be spiritually pure and
philosophically truthful. It should
have nothing to do with dirty political
struggle. The separation of church and
state should work on both sides.
Politics should leave religion alone
also.
I absolutely agree with that last. No
special breaks for religions, no laws,
special zoning restrictions, no ten
commandments in/on public buildings, no
proselytizing, no prayers in government,
no church bells or calls to prayer, no
special restrictions placed on
free-speech with regards to religion,
etc. etc. etc..
Now you are being political by interfering
with legitimate religious practice like
prayer in schools or public space. If you
agree that religious practice has nothing
to do with politics, then religious
practice can happen anywhere according to
people's choice.
Pray all you want but if it is organized,
vocal, held in a public school and others
must be exposed to your religion I disagree.
Ditto prayers in Congress or legislatures
around the country.
Why is that? Why must you be so intolerant?
Prayer is a privilege. You should ask to be
allowed to join the prayer instead.
It is religious nonsense. Those folks are there
to do a job, not waste their time praying to
gods, or broadcasting their tomfoolery.
That would be an entirely different issue. I'm
talking about the genuine religious practice for
our spiritual betterment. It's no different from
people exercising in the park for their physical
betterment.
As long as it doesn't affect me in any way I
couldn't care less. The problem is they seem to think
that they have a duty to change my life to suit
their god.
That would be entirely your misunderstanding. It's not
their god. God is everyone's God. Just because you
don't worship God like a Christian or a Muslim doesn't
mean you don't worship God just as the way you are
even as an atheist. Simply by respecting them, you are
actually respecting yourself.
SEE! exactly the sort of thing I'm railing against! You
immediately start off assuming that everyone has a god
simply because you are programmed to think that there's
this omniscient being hanging around.
I don't respect people who claim they have the fast
track to a god I don't believe in. I don't respect
people that think god makes them better than I am. I
don't respect people who are gullible, or fearful,
insecure, stupid, etc., enough to be sucked in by
religion,
No special breaks for religions. Stupidity should not
be rewarded!
Now you fall back to become political. From the view of
philosophy, everybody has to have a god or God regardless
they like it or not. Therefore, the God belief is just
like the basic human rights for food and water, it should
be something respected by everyone.
YOU believe everyone has a god. I don't. Why can't you
respect my lack of belief in your god?
I don't care your lack of belief in my God. I know your such
lack of belief is in fact your God belief.
You can't be that demented.
There is nothing demented.
How is a lack of belief in your supposed god a belief in your
supposed god?
Because your lack of belief in "my" God is your actual belief in your
own God. Your belief is what you are and who you are. You can always
lack my belief, but you can never lack your own belief. By demonstrating
your own living principle in contradiction or in comparison with my
theist belief, you have only proved your own belief in your own God
except as an atheist.

Is not being a stamp collector a hobby?
Unfortunately for you, life is nothing like collecting stamps. You can
always stop collecting stamps, but you can never stop living life.
Living life is all about human beliefs. You can't have one without the
other. Too bad the atheists may have neither.

You just need to better understand the concept of God-belief.
Why do we need to do that? We already know that it's a sign of
insanity.

Your lack of belief is your living principle.
You mind reading has failed again.

Your living principle is your God-belief.
More failed mind reading.

You serve and worship your living principle just like worshiping God.
And non-stamp collectors serve and worship their living principle
just like philatelists?
That's all nothing but your blind denial.

OF course you can stop living life. Millions
do it every day. Usually it is forced on them, a

This question was asked by Jared Diamond in edge.org. No
answer was given.
Is it partially because of the influence of religion? Are
atheists, in general, more scientifically literate?
I would guess that the answer to both questions is yes.
No. It's because science can't answer the question of
philosophy, and the question of God is a philosophical question
that has nothing to do with physical science.
Now you fall back to become political. From the view of philosophy,
everybody has to have a god or God regardless they like it or not.
Therefore, the God belief is just like the basic human rights for food
and water, it should be something respected by everyone.
YOU believe everyone has a god. I don't. Why can't you respect my
lack of belief in your god?
I don't care your lack of belief in my God. I know your such lack of
belief is in fact your God belief.
You can't be that demented.
There is nothing demented. You just need to better understand the
concept of God-belief.
Your lack of belief is your living principle. Your living principle is
your God-belief. You serve and worship your living principle just like
worshiping God.
You just need analytical reasoning ability and Poof! no more gods.
Just because you drank the KoolAid, doesn't mean everyone has.
The fact remains that, as life, you need to worship something to give
yourself the meaning of life. Whatever your living principle may be, it
is the indication of the God or god in your life.
How is it that your life is so meaningless that you need to invent
gods to give yourself a purpose. And for purpose, you need to worship
your creation?
I'm talking about you and people in general. It's not just about me.
Unfortunately, the real meaning of life can only come from God. Life is
designed this way. There is no other way.
No other way.
surrender, capitulation, no hope, no vision, limited, dead
No, it's the exact opposite. All the good things in life are only found
in God. It is why God is so important to all of us.

According to whom?
According to life itself. The meaning life comes from devoting life to
something valuable and long lasting. Since God's truth is the only
everlasting thing in the universe, it's only human nature to devote
one's life to the truth of God to make life meaningful.

Wrong. Philosophy as knowledge which is a subject instead of an object
always has its own view. It's why no one can misinterpret or hijack the
teaching of philosophy without being proven false by philosophy itself.

This is why the Bible by being a book of philosophy will always be right
and can never be wrong.

school and others must be exposed to your religion I disagree. Ditto
prayers in Congress or legislatures around the country.
Now you fall back to become political. From the view of philosophy,
Philosophy does not have a view. You're talking shit as usual.
Wrong.
No, let me repeat: philosophy doesn't have a view; philosophers have views.

This question was asked by Jared
Diamond in edge.org. No answer was
given.
Is it partially because of the
influence of religion? Are atheists,
in general, more scientifically
literate?
I would guess that the answer to both
questions is yes.
No. It's because science can't answer
the question of philosophy, and the
question of God is a philosophical
question that has nothing to do with
physical science. The scientific answer
of God would be the same as the
scientific answer of Marxism. It's an
abuse of human knowledge and common
logic.
If that were true, the thousands of years
we have been under the rule or religion
should make this world a utopia. All the
good sounding religious bullshit aside,
religion is just another point of
contention among us.
The fault of religion isn't the fault of
philosophy or the fault of the teaching of
God. It's the fault of the fallen men.
Religion is God's spiritual and
philosophical teaching to teach us the
knowledge of truth. It should be
spiritually pure and philosophically
truthful. It should have nothing to do with
dirty political struggle. The separation of
church and state should work on both sides.
Politics should leave religion alone also.
I absolutely agree with that last. No
special breaks for religions, no laws,
special zoning restrictions, no ten
commandments in/on public buildings, no
proselytizing, no prayers in government, no
church bells or calls to prayer, no special
restrictions placed on free-speech with
regards to religion, etc. etc. etc..
Now you are being political by interfering with
legitimate religious practice like prayer in
schools or public space. If you agree that
religious practice has nothing to do with
politics, then religious practice can happen
anywhere according to people's choice.
Pray all you want but if it is organized, vocal,
held in a public school and others must be
exposed to your religion I disagree. Ditto

If your god actually exists, if he has a presence in this universe or at
least the ability to affect and manipulate this universe -- then the
question of his existence (or otherwise) falls within the remit of
science.

Not necessarily. God's existence is spiritual instead of physical. The
spiritual dominates the physical. It's why life dominates the non-life.
It's why only philosophy by studying life can understand God's spiritual
existence.

This question was asked by Jared Diamond in edge.org. No answer was given.
In the US, i have to dispute your premise. I don't think
there is much widespread opposition to science. There is
some opposition to, for example, climate change science,
but not as widespread as you'd think to watch cable news.

There does seem to be a general disinterest in science by
young people. It's boring, uncool, and hard. They want
an easier way to win fame & fortune. College students in
other countries are more likely to pick science and
engineering careers. Fortunately, their best & brightest
often come to the US. That's the only reason we're still
leading in that.

I suspect India (like most developing countries) is more

It is not my premise. It is that of author Jared Diamond. Trump is scientifically illiterate, yet he was elected to be president. It shows that the average person, now, doesn’t care that much about science. But most leaders do care about science, helping make USA a science leader.

Yes, India is more religious at 99.7% according to the 2011 census IIRC. To the best of my knowledge USA is mostly religious, at 79% according to Gallup in 2017. I believe religion must take some of the blame for some opposition to science.

Hillary was no scientist either. It's not like voters
had a choice between a scientist and a boob. And, voters
have a lot of factors to consider. Science policy is a
minor consideration.

I don't see that politicians care about science beyond
its immediate political implications. Ordinary people
take a longer view.

In real life, I know few people in the USA who ever go to
church or show any outward sign of being religious. Most
people i know are secular. If they have religious
beliefs, it only shows up when they have weddings or
funerals. Maybe it's just the company i keep. Then
again, how they respond to polls may be another story.

People in other countries tend to form opinions about the
USA from hollywood movies and CNN. That's not the real
world.

Some people debate the scientific importance of things
like climate change. I think that's not so much
religious resistance, as it is unwillingness to accept
that one's lifestyle is part of the problem. Americans
like their SUVs.

Trump is scientifically illiterate, yet he was elected to be president. It shows that the average person, now, doesn’t care that much about science. But most leaders do care about science, helping make USA a science leader.
Hillary was no scientist either. It's not like voters
had a choice between a scientist and a boob. And, voters
have a lot of factors to consider. Science policy is a
minor consideration.
I don't see that politicians care about science beyond
its immediate political implications. Ordinary people
take a longer view.
Tony Ben once said of politicians and scientists: Politicians only listen to scientific opinion when if confirms the wisdom of what they've already decided to do.

But America is somewhat different from Britain there, because you have significant numbers of scientific literate in politics. In the UK the vast majority of politicians have a legal or classical education. We have a traditional separation between the technical elite and the management/government elite.

In the US, i have to dispute your premise. I don't think
there is much widespread opposition to science. There is
some opposition to, for example, climate change science,
but not as widespread as you'd think to watch cable news.
There does seem to be a general disinterest in science by
young people. It's boring, uncool, and hard. They want
an easier way to win fame & fortune. College students in
other countries are more likely to pick science and
engineering careers. Fortunately, their best & brightest
often come to the US. That's the only reason we're still
leading in that.

Is it partially because of the influence of religion?
I don't think so. The US is not particularly religious.
I suspect India (like most developing countries) is more
religious than the US. There are few young-earth
creationists in the US, kooks on this ng notwithstanding.

Are atheists, in general, more scientifically literate?
It's more like scientifically literate people are more
likely to be atheists.
Unfortunately, being scientifically literate doesn't keep people from
being philosophically and spiritually illiterate. It is why we don't
have many thinkers and philosophers in modern time. We have traded our
philosophical wisdom for scientific cleverness.

I would guess that the answer to both questions is yes.

That is because most of the loony brain damaged Whites have migrated from Europe to US. It is also the reason why you find US has the highest concentration of fools in this world!!!!
