Horror week for the Dow has investors begging for Trump respite

ELENA POPINA
BLOOMBERG NEWS
PUBLISHED 1 HOUR AGO
UPDATED MARCH 23, 2018
Spring has sprung – just not in U.S. stocks, where a harrowing week has
walloped traders with echoes of February's correction.

In the past five years, there have been only two other stretches with
losses of this magnitude. The S&P 500 Index is down 6 per cent. And the
picture looks just as bad for the Dow Jones Industrial Average, which sank
to a four-month low by the Friday close. Both indexes suffered their
steepest weekly drop in more than two years.

Equities are now teetering near – and for blue chips, below – levels seen
at the worst point in February's volatility-fueled meltdown. At the
epicenter this time is U.S. President Donald Trump, with his China tariffs
driving Boeing Co. down more than 5 per cent in a single session on
Thursday and losses rippling across industries from technology to banks.

"Investors that have for months relied on Trump's pro-business rhetoric
are now caught off guard," said Matt Maley, equity strategist at Miller
Tabak & Co. "Trade tariffs are a big change and China's response can even
get stronger. There isn't too much to be optimistic about: investors'
concern associated with Trump's tariffs isn't going to be resolved neither
next week nor the week after."

Consider this as a worrying sign of investor fragility: the S&P 500 has
closed lower than the midpoint of its daily range for 10 straight days,
the longest stretch since at least 1982. That suggests traders are finding
reasons to dump shares in the afternoon rather than buy dips.

Friday slide

Friday was a case in point. The S&P 500 fluctuated for most of the morning
before sinking as much as 2.2 per cent in the afternoon, coming within 0.2
per cent of its Feb. 8 closing low. The Cboe Volatility Index jumped more
than 7 per cent to the highest level since early March.

With every sector trading in the red this week, investors had nowhere to
hide. Concern over Trump's tariffs on $50-billion of Chinese goods roiled
industrial and material companies. China has already hit back, unveiling
its own levies on unveiled tariffs on $3-billion of U.S. imports. And its
ambassador to the U.S. wouldn't rule out the possibility of the Asian
nation scaling back purchases of Treasuries in response.

Read more about China's signal on Treasuries here.

Bank of America Corp., the best-performing big bank stock since Trump's
election, tumbled 9.3 per cent this week. Facebook Inc. plunged 14 per
cent in the throes of a privacy scandal, leading tech megacaps lower.

"It was the week when one bad thing led to another, it was a perfect
storm," said Jim Paulsen, chief investment strategist at Leuthold Weeden
Capital Management. "You took the starch out of the FANGs, you saw banks,
industrials, discretionary companies reacting to negative news. What
investors are not pricing in is a potential impact on companies' profit
margins."

Earnings risk

The uncertainty around how the tariffs will be implemented has analysts
staying quiet on what will happen to earnings. But it's shaping up as a
big risk to watch, given that optimism about the prospects for bumper
profits underpinned the market's jump in January.

Amid all those surprises, the Federal Reserve's anticipated interest-rate
increase on Wednesday almost felt like a side note. But that too has some
investors feeling jittery.

"We saw the Fed talking about two more rate hikes this year, which raises
some concerns about the pace of economic expansion," Paulsen said.
"Aggressive forward-looking Fed tightening policy is something the markets
will need some time to adjust to. When you combine this with other market
concerns, this may be a little too much to take."

The Dow lost 5.7 per cent this week, leaving it almost 5 per cent below
the level where it was before Congress passed Trump's sweeping tax
overhaul in late December. The S&P 500 closed at 2,588.26, hovering just
above its 200-day moving average. Small caps that don't rely on foreign
sales as much as their larger peers did slightly better, losing 4.8 per
cent. The Nasdaq 100 Index sank 7.3 per cent.

The S&P 500's decline since March 9 was its third dip of at least 5 per
cent in two months. Before that, the last time the gauge lost that much
was in June 2016 when the U.K. voted to leave the European Union.

"The quiet days are now gone," said Stephen Carl, head trader at Williams
Capital Group. "There are too many things investors have to be worried
about."

Thanks to having to fix stuff the Dems fucked up ...
Hannity says that Obama is to blame for all of Trump's failures, including
the sex scandals, obstruction of justice and his corrupt gerrymandering of
the economy for personal gain.

It's all about Obama and Hillary these days, no one's talking about Trump, an
admission that everybody knows he's a useless, do-nothing fat turd.

I wish that Trump would grow a spine and lock them up. Who knows why Trump
is afraid of a negro Muslim from Kenya and a crooked Hiltery. He'd rather
have dinner with a terrorist like Kim Jong Un than deal with Obama and
Clinton on home soil.

Fox News said today that the rightwing media in the USA stands to lose its
Kremlin funding soon, it's part of the economic effect of Trump's steel /
aluminum tarrifs.

That flabby old chump Trump can't have much more left on his lifespan. He's
morbidly obese and can't walk 10 yards without jumping into a golf cart
because he's so feeble and out of shape. They say he takes amphetamines to
get by. Pity. An old speed freak rapist liar in the white house. No
wonder why America haters flock to him like Jesus.

Washington Secrets
Trump’s list: 289 accomplishments in just 20 months, ‘relentless’
promise-keeping

The Trump administration’s often overlooked list of achievements has
surpassed those of former President Ronald Reagan at this time and
more than doubled since the last tally of accomplishments after his
first year in office, giving President Trump a solid platform to run
for re-election on.

As Trump nears the two-year mark of his historic election and conducts
political rallies around the country, during which he talks up his
wins in hopes it will energize Republican voters, the administration
has counted up 289 accomplishments in 18 categories, capped by the
confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

They include 173 major wins, such as adding more than 4 million jobs,
and another 116 smaller victories, some with outsize importance, such
as the 83 percent one-year increase in arrests of MS-13 gang members.

“Trump’s successes in reducing the cost of taxes and regulations,
rebuilding our military, avoiding wars of choice and changing the
courts rival those of all previous Republican presidents,” said Grover
Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform.

“Trump has an advantage over Ronald Reagan: He has a Reagan Republican
House and Senate while Reagan had a [Democratic Speaker] Tip O’Neill
House and a pre-Reagan Republican Senate. Reagan and [former GOP
Speaker] Newt Gingrich were the ice breakers that allowed Trump’s
victories to grow in number and significance,” he added.

Unlike the Year One list which included many proposals and orders
still to be acted on, the new collection includes dozens of actions
already in place, signed legislation, and enforced executive orders.

For example, while the Year One list bragged about the
administration’s efforts to rewrite the much-maligned NAFTA trade deal
with Canada and Mexico, the Year Two list said: “Negotiated an
historic U.S.-Mexico-Canada Trade Agreement to replace NAFTA.”
Screen Shot 2018-10-12 at 8.31.47 AM.png
In December, Secrets reported on the first list of White House
accomplishments.

And shockingly the NAFTA achievement is presented as a sidebar to the
larger achievement that reads, “President Trump is negotiating and
renegotiating better trade deals, achieving free, fair, and reciprocal
trade for the United States.” Under that umbrella are eight trade
deals cut with Japan, South Korea, Europe and China.

“President Trump is a truly unique leader in American history. He’s a
kid from Queens who became an international business leader and made
billions by getting things when no one said he could,” said Trump’s
2016 campaign pollster John McLaughlin.

“They told him he couldn’t be president and beat the establishment and
he did. For two years the establishment is telling him he can’t do
things in Washington and he’s succeeding in spite of them. He never
retreats. He doesn’t back up. He’s relentless. He just wins,” he
added.

Comparing the two years shows that the latest has an expanded group of
economic achievements while the pro-life category was folded into the
health care section.

Along the way, there have been some disappointments, such as failing
to replace Obamacare, fund a big infrastructure plan, and build the
border wall.

But the White House believes that despite a lack of media coverage of
his accomplishments, supporters know about them and will head to the
voting polls to help the GOP maintain control of the House and keep
the president on what CNN dubbed a “winning streak.”

In the Washington Post Friday, former Bush speechwriter and columnist
Marc Thiessen agreed and said that Trump has proven to be successful
at keeping his campaign promises. He wrote, “The fact is, in his first
two years, Trump has compiled a remarkable record of presidential
promise-keeping.”

been applied to movements including fascism, Nazism, and racial

Why would they champion violating the second amendment?

Is that something you want?

If it is, then you have to amend the US Constitution. There is nothing else that can allow any meaningful gun control.

Nor is there any reason to.
We need to amend our people and get them to be less violent.

Other countries have high rates of gun possession, without the mass shootings we have.

We have people from all over the world who don't place the same value on life that we do.

We have organized crime and gang bangers with better equipment than the police.

We have a people problem much more than a gun problem.

As it stands now, there is very little constitutionally to control gun ownership.

Short of a change to the constitution I don't see what can be done.

Séems pointless to demand something that would be unconstitutional.

Detailed Report
Factual Reporting: HIGH
Country: USA
World Press Freedom Rank: USA 45/180

History

Founded in 2005, The Washington Examiner is an American political
journalism website and weekly magazine based in Washington, D.C. that
covers politics and policy in the United States and internationally.
The current editor is Hugo Gordon.

Funded by / Ownership

The Washington Examiner is owned by Clarity Media Group, which is in
turn owned by Philip Anschutz, who is an American billionaire
entrepreneur who describes himself as a “conservative Christian.”
Anschutz is also the owner of the right leaning Weekly Standard and
has donated millions of dollars to right leaning causes, including
anti-LGBT groups, such as the Family Research Council, which has been
labeled a hate group. The Washington Examiner is funded through an
advertising and subscription model.

Analysis / Bias

In review, the format and content of the Washington Examiner has been
compared to The Hill, albeit with a right leaning tilt. They generally
report political news as well as local Washington DC news stories. The
Washington Examiner frequently utilizes loaded wording in
sensationalized headlines such as: Trump’s manic Monday amid the
Kavanaugh storm. While the headlines may be sensational, the content
of articles are written with less bias and tend to be properly sourced
to credible media outlets. Editorially, the Washington Examiner is
100% right. It is virtually impossible to find a single editorial that
offers some form of balance. Most editorials have anti-left loaded
headlines such as this: Obama, the Great Divider when in office, lacks
the credibility to lecture America.

A factual search reveals a clean fact check record with only a Half
True and Mixed claim on their record.

Overall, we rate the Washington Examiner Right Biased based on
editorial positions that almost exclusively favor the right and High
for factual reporting due to proper sourcing and a relatively clean
fact check record. (7/18/2016) Updated (D. Van Zandt 9/28/2018)
)))))))

So its conservative in nature, and more importantly...accurate.

Shining certs dont you think? As opposed to the usual Leftwing lies
from most other media sources, funded in part by Soros.

Im glad you appreciate honesty and factualism. Now if only you could
get YOUR side of the MSM to try honesty and factualism...we wouldnt be
having this discussion.

"Poor widdle Wudy...mentally ill, lies constantly, doesnt know who he is, or even what gender "he" is.

No more pathetic creature has ever walked the earth. But...he is locked into a mental hospital for the safety of the public.

Which is a very good thing."

I guess the question remains how many lies "a right leaning tilt" refers to.
