Discussion:
Atheist “fundamentalism”

Atheists should be open minded, and not have blind hatred for theists. The tone of discussion between atheists and theists should be respectful. I am atheist, and many theists disrespect me for my lack of belief. At the same time many atheists accuse me of being a theist, because of my open mind. If your philosophy makes you happy, while respecting the human rights of others, I have no problem, whatever your beliefs.

According to Wikipedia on fundamentalism:

“Fundamentalism usually has a religious connotation that indicates unwavering attachment to a set of irreducible beliefs.[1] However, fundamentalism has come to be applied to a tendency among certain groups—mainly, though not exclusively, in religion—that is characterized by a markedly strict literalism as it is applied to certain specific scriptures, dogmas, or ideologies, and a strong sense of the importance of maintaining ingroup and outgroup distinctions,[2][3][4][5] leading to an emphasis on purity and the desire to return to a previous ideal from which advocates believe members have strayed. Rejection of diversity of opinion as applied to these established "fundamentals" and their accepted interpretation within the group often results from this tendency.”

There is no rational way to associate atheism with
"...markedly strict literalism as it is applied to
certain specific scriptures, dogmas, or ideologies,
and a strong sense of the importance of maintaining
ingroup and outgroup distinctions."

The tone of discussion between atheists and theists should be respectful.
It would be, if theists could only live and let live, didn't wipe
unsolicited nonsense in our faces, didn't lie about science,
scientists and atheists, didn't try to get their nonsense taught in
science classes as "intelligent design theory", pass laws against
things they don't like for religious reasons, etc.

Lying by inventing "reasons" you attribute to people instead of
addressing what they say, hardly helps whatever case you are trying to
make.

The fact that you do this, makes it clear that you have nothing to say
on the subject, even when you bring it up.

But it's a hallmark of trolls.

And how does this apply to what is merely the natural human reaction
to religious harassment, bigotry and nastiness? Or to attacks on
science and scientists by hypocrites trying to get bronze age myth and
legend taught in science classes? Or laws against scientific research
in areas religious fanatics don't like, against abortion, stem-cell
research, global warming prevention, etc?

It's personal lies like that, which get you treated as a liar.

Address what people say, instead of lying about people who have taken
the time and trouble to explain things - that way you stand a chance
of reaching some kind of common ground. But When you resort to
personal lies and nastiness like that, you have lost whatever case
you're trying to make.

I have been posting on and off on various atheist newsgroups for possibly decades. I am interested in the truth, not in name calling those you disagree with. I don’t like people with closed minds. The fact of the matter is that, theists and atheists, both don’t care enough about the truth. When I point this out, I am sure I will be hated by both, and possibly come under personal attack. That is alright, I have learnt to expect hate from people. Some of us aren’t meant for this world.

Oh, grow up. I usually don't resort to "foul language," and may

You and Christopher are lucky that there is no hell. I wonder which circle of hell habitual liars would go to.
Abhinav, you came to alt.atheism with a pack of personal prejudices that
we refuse to accept. This made you angry, so you had to create faults in

Open minded about what? Imaginary magical superbeings vs reality?

And I don't know anybody who has "blind hatred" for theists - that's
what theists have for people who don't put up with their neverending

A straw man you use to attack the atheists here. In other words, a lie

So frikking what?

Atheists have nothing to be fundamentalist about. A negative response
to theists who can't live and let live, is in direct proportion to
their own behaviour.

We're not theists.

That's all there is to it.

We are on the receiving end of a continuous barrage of unsolicited
nonsense, ignorance, rudeness, nastiness, stupidity followed by
outright lies when we respond to correct their ignorance - from
fanatics who amount to something like half the US population, who
control the Republican Party, had the last three Republican Presidents
and whom the current insane one panders to, Congress until January as
well as the Senate and a politically and religiously partisan Supreme
Court.

What lying theists (and we see them here all the time) imagine is
atheist fundamentalism, is the response to that. For example
scientists are accused of being "militant atheists" when they respond
to unwarranted attacks on their science by hypocrites who take
advantage of technologies derived from it. Like the neverending
attacks on evolution when without it modern agriculture and medicine
would be completely different, etc.

Those are just a few examples.

We try to educate and correct them, but there is no discussion. And
instead of even trying to understand, they accuse us of making up
nonsense, bias against the supernatural, etc.

Just as you do when you turn into a whining, paranoid liar and accuse
us of going after you instead of taking any notice of responses, and
then reap even more when you escalate with more lies.

Open minded about what? Imaginary magical superbeings vs reality?
No. Open minded of the value of religion, as ancient literature and philosophy.
We see all we need to know about its "value" from the behaviour of the
fundamentalist half of American Christians. Especially here.

In more than 25 years here, I have never seen any honesty or
intelligence from them, here - they rudely and stupidly post
unsolicited religious nonsense where they know nobody takes it
seriously, including preaching, lies to us about why we don't believe,
other stuff that rudely and stupidly presumes we already believe
enough of it to find arguments based on that convincing, stupid
questions that presume we already believe, like "who created all
this", etc.

No theist poster here has _ever_, in all that time, had the honesty to
acknowledge let alone address refutations and rebuttals of their
unsolicited nonsense including first cause arguments and other
so-called "proofs", their arguments against evolution, modern physics
and other sciences which refute their bronze-age myths and legends.

After a while, it's too much bother to show them anything other than
the contempt they have already shown us - many of them for more than
two decades. Some of us simply show their rudeness and stupidity the
same discourtesy.

The only difference being that we explain why they were wrong about
atheists, evolution, physics, biochemistry, logic and a whole slew of
other things _as_well_as_ treating them as the idiots and liars they
have already shown us they are.

But like you, they focus on the last bit while ignoring the meat of
the response - and they lie about why they get the responses they do.
Nobody asked them to come here, and just like you they have no reason
to turn into whining liars when they reap what they sow.

And yours prove mine - that you can't defend your unsolicited nonsense
and your misrepresentation of atheists. So you invent motives of which
you accuse them.

If you don't mean what your remarks like the one that started this
thread imply, then you should be a heck of a lot more careful. But you
do this far too often for it to be an accident.

This time, you implied that the response to the neverending stream of
rudeness, stupidity and outright lies we have been getting here from
trolling theists, is somehow equivalent to their behaviour towards us.

I don't know anybody here who goes to the religious groups to behave
towards them, the way theists do here - although there have been a few
loonies who did that in the past because they enjoy cross-posting
flame wars.

So what? Atheists are individuals who sometimes get together to

which treats us as pariahs - all the way up to the former President
who just died, who said that atheists shouldn't be considered citizens
because this is "one nation under god" which was unconstitutionally
signed into law in the 1950s by Eisenhower for religious reasons in a
country that is supposed to be secular. Imagine the outcry if he had
said that about Jews, even though there are even less of them than
atheists in the USA.

Atheists should be open minded, and not have blind hatred for theists.
Open minded about what? Imaginary magical superbeings vs reality?
And I don't know anybody who has "blind hatred" for theists - that's
what theists have for people who don't put up with their neverending
stream of unsolicited nonsense and nastiness.
A straw man you use to attack the atheists here. In other words, a lie
about people who simply want to live and let live, but are prevented
from doing that by religious fanatics.
This isn't true I was told by a atheist that you should be able to
prevent people from placing religious symbols where you can see them
from the road even when on your own property. If I want to place a
Buddha or Mother goddess or some Saint on my property it is none of
your business.

I don't like Fundies in my face either BTW.

detail just why he (or she) comes across as an incompetent,
thinly disguised Loki and dishonest closet fundie
(redundancy noted).

The insistence that one maintain an open mind about the
existence of a magical sky fairy is the most basic of the
recruiting tactics employed by believers of religious
nonsense and is instantly recognizable as such by anyone
who has given the possibility even a modicum of
consideration and rejected it.

If one used the same logic in insisting on the possible
existence of Santa, the Tooth Fairy or the Easter Bunny the
appropriate response would be to smile and say "Sure, yeah,
maybe they do" while recognizing that such beliefs are pure
harmless self-delusion. But no one has ever died in the
conflict over whether those fantasies are reality. No one
has ever been arrested or shunned or discriminated against
for failing to believe those imaginary entities. Not so
with the magical sky dictator and his followers.

To an aggressive fundie a militant atheist is simply one
who denies, with equal vigor and persistence, the reality
of the fundie's religious fantasy. One prominent
characteristic of the fundie is the offence taken when we
don't take him (or her) at his naked and unsubstantiated
word but insist upon independently verifiable evidence,
something no god botherer has ever yet provided.

Another atheist fundamentalist, who thinks he knows my beliefs better than me. Just because I find some value in some of the teachings of Jesus or Krishna, does not make me a theist. I don’t know what game you are playing, but I don’t have to play by your rules.

I am not suggesting that atheism is a religion, but that some atheists are so fundamentalist, that they get offended easily, when i quote from religious texts, or maybe when I claim that religion has some value for some people.

By the way, religion does not necessarily imply theism.

It sounds like you're attempting to suggest that any debate
from the atheist's POV is evidence of "atheism as a
religion". That doesn't follow.
There isn't any "debate" between theists and atheists about their
theism because they are incapable of seeing their beliefs through any
other eyes than their own, and they cannot talk about it from any
shared understanding.

Any attempt to talk their god-stuff _at_ us, not with us because there
is no common ground, is both rude and stupid. After they bring it up
in the first place, we don't.

I don't know why this supposed atheist doesn't understand this.

Or that having to point this out almost every day to trolls, somehow
makes people the "atheist fundamentalists" that the lying liar lies
about.
Post by a***@gmail.com
I am not suggesting that atheism is a religion, but that some
atheists are so fundamentalist, that they get offended easily,
when i quote from religious texts, or maybe when I claim that
religion has some value for some people.
As usual, the lying liar lies through his teeth. He needs to take a
good look at himself to understand why he alienates people.

But he's too self-centred and at least borderline narcissistic to do
that, so he blames anybody else but himself.
Post by a***@gmail.com
By the way, religion does not necessarily imply theism.

Well, that's true. But you have to see this from our
perspective as well. Imagine, if you will... you're at
Sunday service, and all the sudden, some foaming-at-the-
mouth atheist slams open the doors and starts yelling about
how religion is a waste of time, and that there probably a
million other more productive things you all could be doing
on a Sunday. And while this hypothetical atheist -- foaming
at the mouth or not! -- kinda has a valid point, there is a
time an a place for debate. And interrupting peaceful
gatherings to push your opinions on others can hardly ever
be justified.

Of course, i'm not accusing you of being a "foaming at the
mouth" type. I'm just illustrating a point here.
Post by a***@gmail.com
By the way, religion does not necessarily imply theism.
Indeed. People get religious about a lot of things that are
hardly worthy of such passion. And theism is just one of
many things that isn't worth all the hubub. Politics is
another. Money is another.

That's why i carry a deep respect for a theist who has the
common manners to keep their god beliefs to themselves.
Which is the best social policy, BTW. No one should ever
care who is a theist and who is an atheist -- or whatever
other group one might claim membership _to_ or exclusion
_from_.

You may have noticed that we atheists take offense when
theist offer their "religious truths" for debate, or, when
they strike-up a conversation that contains any religious
subject matter whatsoever, including, but not limited to,
the "merry Christmas's" and the "bless you's", and all the
other "seeming innocuous" little theistic influences which
have permeated our western culture thanks to this
unchallenged dominance of christianity. And it's true, we
_do_ become agitated. Because it's all just a big fat waste
of time. The truth is, no amount of pleading or treating or
apologetic or even hocus pocus will cause an atheist to
become a non-atheist. It just doesn't work that way. The
only way an atheist could become a non-atheist would be as a
result of some compelling evidence to the contrary. Short of
that, we don't (metaphorically speaking here) bother to "get
off the couch".

Hey whaddya mean "lazy"??? o_O

That's not laziness!

That's "pragmatism in inaction", baby! :-)

The theists seem to forget that atheism, unlike religion, is
not a choice. You don't "decide" to be an atheist. It
doesn't quite work that way. But religion *IS* a choice. And
one, that much like a driver's license, seems to require
constant renewal. That's why the priest is always reminding
you to "accept Jesus into your heart". Because if you don't
make that conscious choice, then you're not a christian
anymore, are you?

Atheists should be open minded, and not have blind hatred for theists. The tone of discussion between atheists and theists should be respectful. I am atheist, and many theists disrespect me for my lack of belief. At the same time many atheists accuse me of being a theist, because of my open mind. If your philosophy makes you happy, while respecting the human rights of others, I have no problem, whatever your beliefs.
I define it in a simpler manner those that hate all who disagree with
them in even the slightest way.

As a example just this week I was told I could not be a agnostic
because I enjoy Christmas music. That was from '***@m.nu' to whom
I consider a fundie or militant atheist.

Agnostic
noun
1.
a person who believes that nothing is known or can be known of the
existence or nature of God or of anything beyond material phenomena; a
person who claims neither faith nor disbelief in God.

The carefully and weaselingly-phrased, button-pushing lie about

I don't know anybody here who "hates theists". But far too many
theists extrapolate from the reaction to their appalling behaviour
towards us, to the lie that we treat all theists that way.

He should tell the theists who can't live and let live, who wipe their
nonsense, rudeness and stupidity in our faces and then turn into
whining, lying hypocrites when they reap what they sow.

They see its being treated as nonsense as "fundamentalist atheism",
but it's their own fault for insisting on the virgin birth,
resurrection, world-wide flood, etc actually happened - and we don't
go looking for them to tell them that these didn't, we simply respond
when they come here with their ridiculous claims.

The lying liar pretends the responses to his in-your-face rudeness and

pointing this out since the 1990s.

Not to mention that the button-pushing, lying liar also accuses us of

With me it depends of where I am, if I am at a home and they pray
before dinner I am silent or at a wedding or funeral. I do find
excessive crosses in a home distasteful. I will only put up with
limited being preached at.

The hate filled of any religion or belief I find disgusting.

The definition of an atheist is one who does not believe that any god or gods exist. There are no extremes there. No fundamentalism there. Just a simple statement of disbelief.

There is no such thing as a fundamentalist atheist or a militant atheist. There are simply people who don't believe in gods.

Any perception of militancy or fundamentalism in atheism are simply the author's beliefs. The people who might be considered militant are simply people who are tired of hearing the same old bullshit over and over and over again as if they had never been debunked. Fundamentalist atheists are simply imaginary as there is only one concept in atheism and that is disbelief. How can one militantly disbelieve?

While most of the atheists I know don't find the Bible to be totally without any merit whatsoever, that does not make them less or more militant it just means they like some of the poetry and the way it is written. As a history book, it has little value. It gets a few things right but exaggerates many others.
Useless as a science book, since everything that should be considered science is really just pseudo-science or imaginary supernatural nonsense.

There is nothing in atheism to be militant or fundamentalist about, one either believes or disbelieves. If one disbelieves, then one is an atheist, end of story.

The standard for an atheist to believe is the same as it always has been, prove God. This is apparently impossible as no person has done so yet.

Whatever the personality of an atheist is it doesn't mean they disbelieve any harder or more militantly or more fundamentally than one who is more cordial and easier to talk to.

It is pretty much all that atheists have in common. If you make it any
more than that, there would be as many meanings as there are atheists
- and if you don't include all of them, you tell plenty of us that we
aren't atheists.

There is no official definition of atheism, though all the definitions put forth pretty much say the same thing: atheism is the lack of belief in the
existence of a god or gods of any kind. This would, of course, include the
lack of belief in the existence of anything religiously connected to such
gods such as heaven, hell, angels, devils, demons, imps, miracles, magic, etc.

https://www.christiantimes.com/article/atheist-nativity-scene-outside-erected-outside-illinois-courthouse/74098.htm
Although this one isn't atheist it is interesting as is the group
https://www.bustle.com/p/a-satanic-statue-in-illinois-state-capitol-has-joined-the-buildings-holiday-decorations-13261833
It shouldn't have to come to this, but I guess it is the only rational
way to approach an entrenched ideology and remain inside the law.
If atheist go outside the law or use intimidation or violence would
they be any better than theist fundies?
Eye for an eye? Bomb an abortion clinic; bomb a church?
Then we'd be like Muslims, Jews, and Xtians.
Yes that is true and to use governmental force to influence people is
still force. Atheist proselytizers?

Atheists should be open minded, and not have blind hatred for
theists. The tone of discussion between atheists and theists
should be respectful. I am atheist, and many theists disrespect
me for my lack of belief. At the same time many atheists
accuse me of being a theist, because of my open mind. If your
philosophy makes you happy, while respecting the human rights
of others, I have no problem, whatever your beliefs.
No, I don't think "open minded" is a practical goal, but any
thinking person should be tolerant of irrelevant opinions
encountered in everyday life. Any community is going to consist
of people with differing opinions, and it is pointless to battle
over irrelevant opinions when it would be much more constructive
to discover the issues that can be agreed upon. However, _in this
newsgroup_ we discuss beliefs, and the validity of beliefs, and
so we are going to dissect, attack, defend, and argue over these
various beliefs here. I would hope that no person has "blind
hatred" for any other person without a considerable and legitimate
rationale.

One of the problems is that the fundamentalists, creationists and
other trolls imagine (or pretend to) that reality vs fantasy is a
matter of opinion.

Also look how many imagine that being treated as liars for their ad
hominems, is "difference of opinion" or "simple disagreement" over
their original irrelevant, unsolicited nonsense. Not to mention how
they come up with even nastier personal lies when they reap what they
sow. Especially when they have ignored explanations

With Mad Joe it's deny, deny, deny and keep denying - even when he's
caught in the act and it's almost immediate. So transparently that it
insults the intelligence, and he loses his temper when people don't
fall for it.
