Discussion:
How much can we suffer?

There is no end to how much we can suffer in the material world. The
material world is designed to be a place of suffering. Of course,
suffering is relative. Some people may enjoy eating a bloody steak. To
me it would be pure suffering to eat a slab of cadaver.

The illusory energy of God, called maya, has two basic potencies -
avaranatmika and praksepatmika - she covers over the soul, and she
drags it down.

Imagine you’d have to eat warm stool. It would be pure suffering. But
for a hog, a pile of fresh stool is totally yummy. For a hog, stool is
considered nice halava.

So for a soul to enjoy eating stool, it has be covered over by maya.
First it’s dragged down into a pig’s body, then it’s covered over by
illusion to the degree that it thinks stool is yummy.

Or consider a worm in stool. The worm lives in shit, it eats shit. The
worm basically lives in hell. But it’s covered over by maya, so much
so that it thinks it’s enjoying life. That’s the power of maya.

Lord Kapila says:

The living entity, in whatever species of life he appears, finds a
particular type of satisfaction in that species, and he is never
averse to being situated in such a condition. —SB 3.30.4

Srila Prabhupada explains:

The satisfaction of the living entity in a particular type of body,
even if it is most abominable, is called illusion. A man in a higher
position may feel dissatisfaction with the standard of life of a
lower-grade man, but the lower-grade man is satisfied in that position
because of the spell of maya, the external energy.

Maya has two phases of activities. One is called praksepatmika, and
the other is called avaranatmika. Avaranatmika means "covering," and
praksepatmika means "pulling down."

In any condition of life, the materialistic person or animal will be
satisfied because his knowledge is covered by the influence of maya.
In the lower grade or lower species of life, the development of
consciousness is so poor that one cannot understand whether he is
happy or distressed.

This is called avaranatmika. Even a hog, who lives by eating stool,
finds himself happy, although a person in a higher mode of life sees
that the hog is eating stool. How abominable that life is!

Sorry to hear how you have suffered...
You have to pray to the idols daily!
You have to chant insanely daily!
You have to feel misery of having no face to face contact with your imaginary!

All in all, you are quite a bit of mental...

...the material world is NOT designed !
Because you say so? hahaha :D

ID is a observable fact of nature, retard.

Here is what famous people, note, people much more intelligent than
you, people who actually think, have to tell a nobody like you. All
you have managed so far is braying like an ass, dumb atheist
assertions.

Professor Werner Gitt, who works in the field of information science
writes:

There is no known natural law through which matter can give rise to
information, neither is there any physical process or material
phenomenon known that can do this. All languages, alphabets, and codes
that we know of, as well as the information spoken or written in them,
originated in minds. The blind faith of the atheist that the first
life was an exception is contrary to all known evidence.

(Werner Gitt, In the Beginning Was Information, 1997, p. 79)

"The probability that life arose by a coincidence can be likened to
the probability that a voluminous encyclopedia be the result of an
explosion in a print shop." - Biologist Edwin Conklin

"From my earliest training as a scientist I was very strongly
brainwashed to believe that science cannot be consistent with any kind
of deliberate creation. That notion has had to be painfully shed. I am
quite uncomfortable in this situation, the state of mind I now find
myself in. But there is no logical way out of it. I now find myself
driven to this position by logic. There is no other way in which we
can understand the precise ordering of the chemicals of life except to
invoke the creations on a cosmic scale. . . We were hoping as
scientists that there would be a way round our conclusion, but there
isn’t."

--Sir Frederick Hoyle and Chandra Wickramsinghe, There Must Be A God,
Daily Express, Aug. 14, 1981. & Hoyle On Evolution. Nature, Nov. 12,
1981, 105

The hypothesis that life evolved from inorganic matter is still to
this day a matter of belief. - Matematician J. W. N. Sullivan

"A common sense interpretation of the facts suggests that a
superintellect has monkeyed with physics, as well as with chemistry
and biology, and that there are no blind forces worth speaking about
in nature. The numbers one calculates from the facts seem to me so
overwhelming as to put this conclusion almost beyond question." - Fred
Hoyle, astrophysicist

"I find it as difficult to understand a scientist who does not
acknowledge the presence of a superior rationality behind the
existence of the universe as it is to comprehend a theologian who
would deny the advances of science." - Wernher von Braun

"The gift of mental power comes from God, Divine Being, and if we
concetrate our minds on that truth, we become in tune with this great
power." - Nikola Tesla

"The most beautiful system of the sun, planets, and comets, could only
proceed from the counsel and dominion of an intelligent and powerful
Being." - Isaac Newton

God created everything by number, weight and measure. - Isaac Newton
"The cardinal error of science lies in shutting the Creator out of His
Creation." - Walter Russell, Doctor of Science

"It is true, that a little philosophy inclineth man’s mind to atheism,
but depth in philosophy bringeth men's minds about to religion; for
while the mind of man looketh upon second causes scattered, it may
sometimes rest in them, and go no further; but when it beholdeth the
chain of them confederate, and linked together, it must needs fly to
Providence and Deity." - Sir Francis Bacon

Religion and science are opposed ... but only in the same sense as
that in which my thumb and forefinger are opposed - and between the
two, one can grasp everything. - Sir William Bragg, Nobel Prize in
Physics 1915

"My religiosity consists in a humble admiration of the infinitely
superior spirit that reveals itself in the little that we, with our
weak and transitory understanding, can comprehend of reality." -
Albert Einstein

"As a man who has devoted his whole life to the most clearheaded
science, to the study of matter, I can tell you as a result of my
research about the atoms this much: There is no matter as such! All
matter originates and exists only by virtue of a force which brings
the particles of an atom to vibration and holds this most minute solar
system of the atom together. . . . We must assume behind this force
the existence of a conscious and intelligent Mind. This Mind is the
matrix of all matter." --Max Planck

"Science cannot solve the ultimate mystery of nature. And that is
because, in the last analysis, we ourselves are a part of the mystery
that we are trying to solve." -- Max Planck

"Then we shall...be able to take part in the discussion of the
question of why it is that we and the universe exist. If we find the
answer to that, it would be the ultimate triumph of human reason - for
then we would know the mind of God." - Steven Hawkings

"It seems to me that when confronted with the marvels of life and the
universe, one must ask why and not just how. The only possible answers
are religious. . . . I find a need for God in the universe and in my
own life." - Arthur L. Schawlow, Professor of Physics at Stanford
University, 1981 Nobel Prize in physics

"It seems to me pretty plain there is a third thing in the universe -
consciousness - which i cannot see to be matter, force or any
conceivable modification of either". Biologist Thomas Huxley.

" I regard consciousness as fundamental. I regard matter as a
derivative from consciousness. We cannot get behind consciousness.
Everything we talk about, everything we regard as existing, postulates
consciousness ". The father of modern day physics Max Planck.

"We can admittedly find nothing in physics or chemistry which has even
a remote bearing on consciousness, yet all of us know there is such a
thing simply because we have it ourselves. Hence consciousness must be
part of nature or more generally reality. Which means that quite apart
from the laws laid down in quantum theory, we must also consider laws
of quite a different kind”. Nobel prize winner Niels Bohr

"Consciousness is part of our universe, so any physical theory which
makes no proper place for it falls fundamentally short of providing a
genuine description of the world. A scientific world-view which does
not profoundly come to terms with the problem of conscious minds can
have no serious pretensions of completeness." -- Roger Penrose

"When the province of physical theory was extended to encompass
microscopic phenomena through the creation of quantum mechanics, the
concept of consciousness came to the fore again. It was not possible
to formulate the laws of quantum mechanics in a fully consistent way
without reference to the consciousness." Eugene Wigner.

"It will remain remarkable, in whatever way our future concepts may
develop, that the very study of the external world led to the
scientific conclusion that the content of the consciousness is the
ultimate universal reality" Physicist, Nobel Laurette Eugene Wigner.

Besides, Gitt is nothing of the thought. Please let us know,

The fact is that the most brainy and prominent scientists contradict
your idiotic notion of a world that created itself out of a bunch of
chemicals. Nobody with a brain actually believes that.

Here is what they say -

Now listen to Blockhead whine--but, but Fred Hoyle believed in Aliens

There is no end to how much we can suffer in the material world. The
material world is designed to be a place of suffering. Of course,
suffering is relative. Some people may enjoy eating a bloody steak. To
me it would be pure suffering to eat a slab of cadaver.
The illusory energy of God, called maya, has two basic potencies -

We see no explanation from you, but all you have to do is to inform us that you are an faithful believer...that is not difficult!
Seeing that you are a faithful believer in abiogenesis and evolution,
it's clearly not difficult.

The very phenomenon of being alive is an experience of the soul. A
thoughtful person will ask - why am I alive? What is the symptom of a
soul, and how can I know the presence of soul?

Many people maintain that there is no soul, that the experience of
being alive can be attributed to chemical reactions in the brain. But
that is a relatively new idea, that was basically introduced by modern
science. Since the beginning of time, all cultures of the world have
been talking about a soul.

So its a matter of choice. We can choose to believe in science, that
there is no soul, or we can choose to believe in what people have
always believed in - the immortal soul. Personally, I find that choice
a no-brainer.

Consciousness is the symptom of the soul. Whenever we see a living
entity we should identify a soul rather than a body.

"The soul is atomic in size and can be perceived by perfect
intelligence. This atomic soul is floating in the five kinds of air
[prana, apana, vyana, samana and udana]. The soul is situated within
the heart, and it spreads its influence all over the body of the
embodied living entities. When the soul is purified from the
contamination of the five kinds of material air, its spiritual
influence is exhibited." -- Mundaka Upanishad, 3.1.9

People usually identify themselves with their body and its culture,
and that false identification of oneself is due to ignorance of the
real self. So our real identity is as souls, and in Bhagavad Gita, God
offers a brilliant argument to help us realize our identity as souls,
different from the body and mind

Krishna says:

As the embodied soul continuously passes, in this body, from boyhood
to youth to old age, the soul similarly passes into another body at
death. A sober person is not bewildered by such a change. (Bg. 2.13)

What Krishna is saying here, is that the body changes from childhood,
to youth, to old age. But the self, or the ‘I’ within, remains the
same. One's mind and intelligence change, certainly. One's thoughts,
feelings and convictions change as time progresses. But it is the same
inner observer who experiences these changes. The I-feeling remains
constant.

So, despite the alterations of matter in the body and mind, we remain
the same observer. And that is the eternal soul.

It is the same person, or soul, who sits in a child's body, as the one
sitting in the old man's body. The person didn't change, it’s always
the same ‘me.’

The person’s thoughts and feelings and intelligence change, but it is
the same self experiencing those changes. In this way anyone can
experience their own real self.

The soul, or the self, belongs to God’s marginal energy. That the soul
is marginal, means it will be controlled either by spirit or matter.
It will be controlled either by God, or by the body and its culture.

The choice we have is whether we want to be controlled by matter, or
by God.

When one's choice is motivated by the desire to become free from the
false ego, free from bodily identification, then one begins his
spiritual journey back home, back to Godhead.

As long as we think we can become happy in a material body, we are in
illusion, and the minute we realize we are not this body, and that the
happiness of the body is ephemeral and without substance, we can
achieve real happiness - the happiness of the soul.

Krishna says:

A person who is not disturbed by the incessant flow of desires -- that
enter like rivers into the ocean, which is ever being filled but is
always still -- can alone achieve peace, and not the man who strives
to satisfy such desires. --Bg 2.70

It's a standard dishonesty of religious fanatics to replace better
words with "believe" so they can pretend reality is somehow equivalent
to his deluded fantasies.

Jesper rejects modern science when it refutes his bronze age mythology
- which is insanity.

But he hypocritically benefits from its derived technologies, from
modern agriculture (not just evolution and biotech but the nitrate
fertilisers which feed the world). the quantum physics which give the
microelectronics in his computer, cell phone, networks, etc.

While at the same time he attacks the science and scientists who
provide all this.

Why hasn't he the integrity to admit these?

Bhagavad Gita is the essence of the Vedic teachings encapsulated in
the Upanishads. Bhagavad Gita is also called the Gitopanishad.
Bhagavad Gita, being the direct words of God Himself, even though it
is in the shmriti category of the Vedas, is considered shruti.

Krishna ends His discourse to Arjuna with this advice -

Krishna says:

Abandon all varieties of religion and just surrender unto Me. I shall
deliver you from all sinful reaction. Do not fear. --Bg 18.66

It is said that bad karma hits in three basic ways - poverty, disease,
and being harassed by the state. The advantage of being wealthy is
that there is no suffering from poverty. There are other advantages to
being wealthy - it’s easier to have one’a desires fulfilled. As we all
know, wealth can’t buy happiness, but it can buy lots of
sense-gratification, which is an advantage to those who confuse
sense-gratification with happiness.

Actually, the bottom line in the material world is suffering, for the
simple reason that everything ends in old age, disease and death. Not
all the wealth in the world can buy us more time, or make us more
happy than we are allotted by our karma.

The only way to escape the fundamental suffering of living in a
material body, is to cultivate spiritual knowledge. Spiritual
knowledge begins with knowing the difference between matter and spirit
- the difference between the body and the self.

Krishna says:

My dear Arjuna, because you are never envious of Me, I shall impart to
you this most confidential knowledge and realization, knowing which
you shall be relieved of the miseries of material existence. (Bg. 9.1)

Only by knowing oneself as an eternal particle of consciousness, can
one gain real happiness. Real happiness is a constant fact. Real
happiness is not constantly being interrupted by misery. People of the
modern world are not educated in real happiness.

In the modern consumer civilization people are indoctrinated into
believing that sense-enjoyment will create happiness for them. Indeed,
bodily and mental enjoyments are the only types of happiness people
know of. But sense-enjoyment is merely a temporary pause in the basic
suffering of the body and mind.

Sex, for instance, is regarded by most people to be the highest joy
available. But sex-enjoyment are merely an attempt to escape the
suffering of being without sex. It's misery to live in forced
celibacy. Anyone who has reached puberty can testify to that.

Or eating. To eat is considered one of life's major enjoyments. But
actually, to eat is merely an attempt to escape the suffering of
hunger. People of the Western culture don't know what it means to
suffer from famine, but it is a great suffering experienced by many
people around the world.

And that's how it is with most of the enjoyment we seek. Eating,
sleeping, mating, and defending are the four activities humans have in
common with all other living entities. In the modern world, however,
it has become the foremost goal to fulfill and satisfy these four
needs.

They have been made the standard of happiness and enjoyment in life.
What do we do together with our loved ones, with our family and
friends? We eat, we sleep, we mate, and we defend. The entire
civilization revolves around these four activities. That's an animal
civilization. Humans are expected to have a higher goal in life than
merely satisfying basic, bodily and mental urges.

"Both animals and men share the activities of eating, sleeping, mating
and defending. But the special property of the humans is that they are
able to engage in spiritual life. Therefore without spiritual life,
humans are on the level of animals." --Hitopadesa

Millions of tons of iron are extracted from the earth to make pots,
knives and forks. Whole forests are cut down to make serviettes and
napkins. Add to that the industrial setup to manufacture cups and
glasses etc. And for sleeping - beds, mattresses, pillows, quilts,
covers, the list goes on and on. A massive enterprise - all of it,
just to eat and sleep. What to speak of the meat-industry, the second
largest industry in the world, only topped by the defense industry.

So the global culture is nothing more than one giant industrial setup
to fulfill four basic bodily needs. The fact is that the modern,
global civilization is an exploitative civilization that rapes and
plunders nature, and puts her inhabitants through untold suffering.
And it’s proudly called the industrialized, developed world.

Anyway, the happiness that can be obtained by surrendering to
Krishna's enjoyment is so far superior to the happiness that can be
squeezed out of matter, that sex with the most beautiful women become
like broken glass in comparison.

And who or what is to be blamed for the fact that the modern world
runs on animal principles? Atheism. Atheism reduces the human being to
nothing more than an animal.

In reality, the human life-form is a unique opportunity for the soul
to realize its real identity. The soul cannot realize itself in any
other life-form. In other forms of life, the soul is simply absorbed
in eating, sleeping, mating, and defending. The human form of life is
a waste of time for the soul, if it is not used to learn about one's
relation to Krishna.

Krishna should be the only center. He is the beloved of the soul. When
we love Krishna, who is the root of everything, we automatically love
all His parts and parcels - all other living entities.

It's like watering a tree. One does not benefit a tree by pouring
water on its every leaf, twig and branch. Water is poured on the root.
Then the whole tree is nourished. In the same way all living entities
are benefited and nourished when one serves Krishna - the root of all
existence.

Lord Brahma says:

"One attains the human form of life after transmigrating through
8,400,000 species by the process of gradual evolution. That human life
is spoiled for those conceited fools who do not take shelter of the
lotus feet of Govinda."

You do not find it curious that a book, supposedly written with the
inspiration of an omniscient god, neglects to mention a major event of
some 66 million years ago, particularly as this event made large
mammals (including us) possible? This impact was almost as good as Ye
Floode at bumping off life, and has the advantage in that field of
being physically possible (as the needed additional three
hydrospheres of water is not). It's a much better back story, and an
exciting one, too.

Why do you keep rudely talking at atheists as if we believed that
bullshit when you know we don't?

Instead of at least trying to use common shared understanding - when

You do not find it curious that a book, supposedly written with the
inspiration of an omniscient god, neglects to mention a major event of
some 66 million years ago, particularly as this event made large
mammals (including us) possible? This impact was almost as good as Ye
Floode at bumping off life, and has the advantage in that field of
being physically possible (as the needed additional three
hydrospheres of water is not). It's a much better back story, and an
exciting one, too.
...and one based on evidence as well, not just bronze age mythology.

Considering that you are apparently a Bible believer and base the

believe I have already commented on your intelligence, so this
ignorant stance comes as no surprise.

So what? All those things are true.
Bats are birds?

Every animal on earth could walk to Noah's house?

Nonsense.

God created an entire universe but was too lazy to write his own bible, which is full of folk tales, myths, forgeries, and outright lies.

I guess him omniscient powers were on the blink that day.

It takes a special kind of gullibility to believe that kind of nonsense. The same kind of gullibility that allows one to think that mad Joe isn't mad.

Just demonstrate that any of the miracles in the bible actually happened.

Please produce a photo of a quadruped bird.

Ditto for a quadruped insect.

Hey Lucy, I differ from you, the same way Einstein differs from a
doorknob, intellectually.

In Bhagavad Gita, Krishna states that the mind is one His eight
separated, material elements. Because of being temporary, rather than
eternal, the material world is in the category of illusion, or
unreality. Thus, any problems in the mind are illusory. Even though
the problems of the mind are illusory, still, these problems will
cause suffering.

The main problem of the mind is a lack of spiritual understanding. As
long as the mind identifies with the body and its culture, there are
going to be problems.

All suffering is a result of ignorance of one’s real self. Actually,
for the soul there is no suffering, only the body and mind suffer.

When one becomes aware of one’s real self and its relation to God, all
suffering will vanish, for all suffering stem from the body and mind.
The body and the mind are like a vehicle for the soul. Even though the
suffering is illusory, because of attachment to the body and mind, the
soul experiences suffering.

Krishna says:

A man must elevate himself by his own mind, not degrade himself. The
mind is the friend of the conditioned soul, and his enemy as well.
--Bg 6.5

For him who has conquered the mind, the mind is the best of friends;
but for one who has failed to do so, his very mind will be the
greatest enemy. --Bg 6.6

Krishna is an imaginary being.
Funny how people down through history, people with brains, thinking
people, people so much more intelligent and important than you - a
whiny loser bitching ad moaning on usenest - disagree with you.

"The reader is nowhere raised into and sustained in a bigger, purer or
rarer region of thought than in the Bhagavad Gita"
- Henry David Thoreau

"So far as I am able to judge, nothing has been left undone, either by
man or nature, to make India the most extraordinary country that the
sun visits on his rounds. Nothing seems to have been forgotten,
nothing overlooked. "Land of religions, cradle of human race,
birthplace of human speech, grandmother of legend, great grandmother
of tradition. The land that all men desire to see and having seen once
even by a glimpse, would not give that glimpse for the shows of the
rest of the globe combined." --Mark Twain

"When doubts haunt me, when disappointments stare me in the face, and
I see not one ray of hope on the horizon, I turn to Bhagavad Geeta and
find a verse to comfort me; and I immediately begin to smile in the
midst of overwhelming sorrow. Those who meditate on the Gita will
derive fresh joy and new meanings from it every day." - Mahatma Gandhi
"The marvel of the Bhagavad Geeta is its truly beautiful revelation of
life's wisdom which enables philosophy to blossom into religion." -
Herman Hesse

"The Bhagavad Geeta is the most systematic statement of spiritual
evolution of endowing value to mankind. It is one of the most clear
and comprehensive summaries of perennial philosophy ever revealed;
hence its enduring value is subject not only to India but to all of
humanity." - Aldous Huxley

"The idea that man is like unto an inverted tree seems to have been
current in by gone ages. The link with Vedic conceptions is provided
by Plato in his Timaeus in which it states 'behold we are not an
earthly but a heavenly plant.' This correlation can be discerned by
what Krishna expresses in chapter 15 of Bhagavad Geeta." - Carl Jung

"The Bhagavad Geeta has a profound influence on the spirit of mankind
by its devotion to God which is manifested by actions." - Dr. Albert
Schweitzer

"In the morning I bathe my intellect in the stupendous and cosmogonal
philosophy of the Bhagavad Geeta, in comparison with which our modern
world and its literature seem puny and trivial." - Henry David
Thoreau

"The religion and philosophy of the Hebrews are those of a wilder and
ruder tribe, wanting the civility and intellectual refinements and
subtlety of Vedic culture." - Henry David Thoreau

"In the whole world there is no study so beneficial and so elevating
as that of the Upanishads. It has been the solace of my life -- it
will be the solace of my death." -- Arthur Schopenhauer

"I owed a magnificent day to the Bhagavad Gita. It was as if an empire
spoke to us, nothing small or unworthy, but large, serene, consistent,
the voice of an old intelligence which in another age and climate had
pondered and thus disposed of the same questions which exercise us."
-- Ralph Waldo Emerson The famous poem "Brahm" is an example of his
Vedanta ecstasy.

"The most beautiful, perhaps the only true philosophical song existing
in any known tongue ... perhaps the deepest and loftiest thing the
world has to show." --Wilhelm von Humboldt

"The writers of the Indian philosophies will survive, when the British
dominion in India shall long have ceased to exist, and when the
sources which it yielded of wealth and power are lost to
remembrances." --Lord Warren Hastings

Did Ye Floode happen? Prove it.
You're not very well read, Mitchell or you'd know there's lots of
proof.
For very small values of "lots." (lots = 0). Meanwhile, a bit of
reading for you:

Personally, I have said many times that I would welcome ANY
evidence of the existence of any god, and I have even specified
indirect evidence that would be quite convincing, not only to me, but
(I suspect) to all the wicked atheists here: the residue of the
Noachan Flood. It avoids the problem of "how can there be physical
evidence for a spiritual being?" by focusing on one instance in which
that spiritual being supposedly interacted physically with the
physical world in a way that would have produced distinctive physical
consequences. While we have seen fundies claim that their god is so
deceitful as to cover his tracks, I, for one, would presume that such
a dishonest being is unworthy of being taken seriously, much less of
worship.

I do not concern myself here with the issue of the needed two
additional hydrospheres of water and its drainage out of earth's
gravity well, nor with the necessary consequences resulting therefrom
by operation of the laws of physics: the atmospheric pressure
resulting from a "vapor canopy" that would prevent the existence of
life as we know it, the heat release from the condensation of that
much water that would be sufficient to melt lead anywhere in the
atmosphere, etc. are very serious impediments to the veracity of the
story, but most, if not all, fundies lack sufficient knowledge of
physics to be able to follow the reasoning. It only confuses them,
leading them to drag out yet another version of the Deceitful God,
who, they claim, sets the laws of physics aside his wonders to
perform. Instead, I simply take the Genesis account at its face value,
looking at the effects that much water falling at that rate would
inescapably have upon the face of the earth.

We have an account of a global flood directly produced by Yahweh
in the Bible. Given the fact that we have information, presumably from
a source inspired by omniscience, of the extent of the flood ("over
the highest mountains," or roughly 30,000 feet above present sea
level) and of the time of the rain (40 days and 40 nights = 40 24-hour
days = 960 hours), it is easy to calculate the rate of the rainfall:
30,000/960 = 31.25 feet of water fell per hour. That is little better
than six inches of rainfall per minute.

I would think that "gullywasher" fails to do this rate justice,
inasmuch as that term is applied to rainfalls of one or two inches per
hour. Suffice it to say that this rain would wash away pretty much any
particles smaller than Volkswagens and deposit all of this in a single
stratum covering the low-lying areas world-wide.

We know from geology that floods leave evidence in direct
proportion to their size (this stratum would, for instance, be far
thicker than any other ever created and would cover all the area on
earth with its thickness varying in inverse proportion to altitude),
and we further know from the mechanics of disposition of suspended
solids in fluids the type and extent of the stratum that would be laid
down by a global flood. Those larger particles would lie at the bottom
of the stratum, with progressively smaller bits covering them. In
addition to that, the contents of that stratum, the remains of ALL
creatures mingled together under optimal conditions for fossilization
(heavy sedimentation at great depths, with the finest materials
thickly sealing the top) are known: in short, a universal unique event
would produce a universal unique outcome--a stratum like no other in
the geologic column.

Such a stratum would furnish perfectly good indirect evidence for
the existence of this Yahweh person, just as tracings on a
photographic plate tell us of subatomic particles or the behavior of
objects in space tells us of the existence of enormous gravitational
forces only explicable by the presence of a black hole.

So show us this stratum. That would be evidence.

Thankee.

I wrote it back in the 90s and suspect that it is, if anything, too
conservative (Volkswagens are probably not the upper limit of particle
sizes moved), and I trot it out from time to time. I fear the
addressee on this occasion (Dow, whose ignorance includes the entire
universe without suffering indigestion) will not comprehend it. If
she comments, it will probably be to call it "silly."

Wait.... your son said that "mammal" is an arbitrary classification?

Do you actually understand how taxonomy works? I'm not trying to be
condescending, by the way... though I'm sure you think I am. I'm just
trying to ascertain how much effort I should put into trying to
explain it to you.

The next part of your statement's interesting, though. It's not hard
to disprove the bible, by the way. If you're of the opinion that the
bible is the infallible word of God, then all anyone has to do to
disprove it is to find a single instance where it's wrong... and there
are any number of those.

As an atheist, I don't need to "make up" things. It's my obligation to
think critically and analyze the things that theists say, and
determine whether they make sense or not. The "making up" of things is
far more likely to be done by those who think it's necessary to have a
supernatural being create an earthly version of himself only to have
him endure unimaginable torment in a crucifixion, or persist in the
truly bizarre idea that a communion wafer is the actual body of
Christ.

If by "we" you mean humans, then you're correct. Humans have no use for bat milk.

Baby bats, on the other hand, are quite fond of the stuff. Bats, being mammals, suckle their young on milk, just like cows and cats and coyotes and humans do.

Really? Please demonstrate the "birdiness" of bats,
Here is the scripture under debate.

“These are the birds that are detestable to you. You must never eat
them: the griffon vulture, the bearded vulture, the black vulture, the
kite, falcons of all kinds, ravens of all kinds, the eagle owl, the short
eared owl, the seagull, hawks of all kinds, the little owl, the cormorant,
the great owl, the barn owl, the desert owl, the Egyptian vulture, the
stork, herons of all kinds, the hoopoe, and the bat."
~ Leviticus 11:13-19

The word translated as bird ( verse 11 above), in English Bibles is the
Hebrew word 'owph, (עוֹף) which is in fact a much ~ broader term~
that encompass not only birds, but > all winged creatures including
insects and bats. Therefore, a more accurate translation would be ...
*a creature with wings or a flying animal*, rather than " bird".

https://theevidenceisplain.blogspot.com/2019/02/why-does-bible-say-that-bats-are-birds.html

God was giving instruction through Moses, here in Leviticus 11 and
Deuteronomy 14, as to what was permitted for human consumption.

Bats are carriers of many diseases. If you are wise, don't eat them.

The Bible is true.
There is some small bit of truth insofar as there are people mentioned that happened to exist.

The rest is unproven or rejected for lack of evidence or contradiction of known laws of physics.

Mostly it's just crap.

Prove any of the supernatural events actually happened.

Preaching on-line to antagonists, one thing I hear real often is - uh
duh, you can't think for yourself. You need some old books to think
for you.

But the real fact of the matter is that main-stream people would be up
the proverbial creek without a paddle if they didn't have TV,
newspapers and magazines to tell them what to think and believe. They
all say the same things and have the same values. How is it
independent thinking to talk, think and be like millions of other
people?

I would venture to say, that the more a point of view is prevalent in
society, the more people who share a view-point, the less independent
it is.

Practically nobody except the Hare Krishnas think like the Hare
Krishnas, and the Hare Krishnas are a tiny minority of people on
planet. So actually the Hare Krishnas must be the most independent
type of thinkers.

The Hare Krishna way of thinking is based on an ancient, revealed
science, that has been tried and tested since time immemorial whereas
the thinking of people in mainstream society is dictated by mass media
and Hollywood. So whose thinking is most independent, seriously? That
also begs the question - what is the definition of independent
thinking, and who defines it?

If you say, independent thinking is defined by the majority of people,
how is it independent thinking? So when people tell you, that you have
no independent thoughts, they have no idea what they are talking
about. They are merely mindlessly repeating a slogan.

Next time someone challenges you - you can't think for yourself - ask
that person to name just one single, miniscule, little thought he or
she has come up with by themselves. Let's hear some of your
independent thoughts. That'll stomp anyone... just try. Nothing of
what people in general have to offer are based on independent
thinking.

The real fact is that nobody is thinking independently. Everyone's
thinking is inspired by what they have heard and learned from others.
So what's best? - to be inspired by the ancient teachings of the Vedic
tradition or to be inspired by CNN and Fox news or the garbage they
teach you in school?

"I owed a magnificent day to the Bhagavad Geeta. It was the first of
books; it was as if an empire spoke to us, nothing small or unworthy,
but large, serene, consistent, the voice of an old intelligence which
in another age and climate had pondered and thus disposed of the same
questions which exercise us."
- Ralph Waldo Emerson

Krishna says:

One must deliver himself with the help of his mind, and not degrade
himself. The mind is the friend of the conditioned soul, and his enemy
as well. (Bg. 6.5)

For him who has conquered the mind, the mind is the best of friends;
but for one who has failed to do so, his mind will remain the greatest
enemy. (Bg. 6.6)

So, you think you can speak for God? The God that's supposed to love us all?
The God who is supposed to be omnipotent and omniscient? Seems like his omniscience is unreliable. If not he would know enough to show himself a little more often. And why is there so much incorporation of older religions and the religions of the conquerors?

Christianity and Judaism seem to be very flexible and derivative.

That's what happens when you make it all up.

According to the Vedic Version, God has 3 main energies - the internal
potency, which manifests the eternal, spiritual world; the external
potency, which manifests the material world, and the intermediate
potency, which is the individual souls. The soul is called
tatastha-shakti, or intermediate potency because it can be under the
influence of either Krishna's internal, spiritual potency or His
external potency, the material world. The soul posseses a minute
degree of free will in that it can choose to be ruled by Krishna's
internal potency or by His external potency. The soul is never
independent like God, it is always governed.

The soul is an atomic particle of God's consciousness and cannot exist
in an independent state, much like the spark cannot exist without the
fire. The soul is always dependent. It will be ruled by Krishna either
directly through His internal potency or indirectly through His
external, material potency - Maya.

When the soul is governed by by Krishna's spiritual potency, it exists
in its original, eternal position of knowledge and bliss. When it is
governed by Krishna's material energy - Maya - the soul exists in
forgetfulness and ignorance about its real position, thinking that it
is its physical body and mind.

Bhakti-yoga, or devotion to God, is the scientific method of leading
the soul back from its present deluded condition, back to its original
position as part of Krishna's spiritual energy.

And that is also religion. The word re-ligio, from Latin, means to
re-connect. We know the word lego, which means 'I connect'. So
religion is not just some sectarian belief in God, like less
intelligent people like to assert, it is a process by which to connect
to God.

The same word in Sanskrit is yoga, which means to connect or to unite.
Again, we know that from the English word yoke, as in 'he yoked the ox
to the wagon'. So yoga or religion is the science of uniting with God.

Krishna says:

My dear Arjuna, because you are never envious of Me, I shall impart to
you this most confidential knowledge and realization, knowing which
you shall be relieved of the miseries of material existence. (Bg. 9.1)

This knowledge is the king of education, the most secret of all
secrets. It is the purest knowledge, and because it gives direct
perception of the self by realization, it is the perfection of
religion. It is everlasting, and it is joyfully performed. (Bg. 9.2)

But, Teresita, you KNOW that a buckler is a "small"

small and may only avail himself of a small part

But those men who wrote the bible were supposed to be divinely inspired.

If that's true, there should be no errors. Of course if God got off his lazy ass and wrote the damn thing himself, it would of course be error-free. But then God would have to actually exist for that to happen. Guess the old omniscience was broken that day.

You should be in a different NG.
What? Get a grip, Couldboy. She is exactly in the right group, being
as AA is a group of fanatic believers in myths and fairytales.

Science is the empirical study of the world, and spirituality deals
with the non-material aspects of the world. It is possible to study
the non-material scientifically. Consciousness is a non-material
aspect of existence, in fact, existence itself is non-material, since
being alive is a non-material phenomenon.

So the very basis of anyone’s existence is a spiritual one. In this
material world only the soul is alive, everything else, including the
body and mind, consists of dead matter.

A dogma has been created in modern society, however - science deals
with knowledge, and spirituality or religion deal with faith. But that
is nonsense. To say it’s impossible to know about the spiritual self
within (the soul) and God, is just that - an empty slogan that makes
no sense.

It’s like saying you can know about a car, but you can’t know about
the driver within the car. You can only believe there is a driver.
Factually, one can know God and the soul, with the same certainty that
one can know there is a driver in a moving car. What is required for
knowing God is a spiritual science. To maintain that there is no such
thing as a spiritual science, that everything about nature, including
conscious awareness, can be explained in terms of matter, is obviously
false.

Krishna says:

Now hear, O son of Prtha, how by practicing yoga in full consciousness
of Me, with mind attached to Me, you can know Me in full, free from
doubt. --Bg 7.1

Of all creations I am the beginning and the end and also the middle, O
Arjuna. Of all sciences I am the spiritual science of the self, and
among logicians I am the conclusive truth. --Bg 10.32

The living entity, in whatever species of life he appears, finds a
particular type of satisfaction in that species, and he is never
averse to being situated in such a condition. —SB 3.30.4

Dude, you give like, the worst pep talks ever.
Glad you think so, Cloudboy.

Nothing indicates that science one day will explain everything.
Science can’t even explain the most basic ingredient of existence,
namely consciousness, what to speak of everything. Science is no
closer to explaining everything than they were in stone-ages.

The fact is that science has nothing sensible to say about life and
death. Actually, the only thing science is good for is producing
technology, and when we live in a world where the general mass of
people are kept in awe and reverence of technological wonders, science
has become a most noble and sacred undertaking.

Now a days, people have the same awe and reverence for scientists that
they used to have for their priests. So-called scientific theories
like abiogenesis and evolution, even though they are pure and
unalloyed myths, are being taught in all educational institutions of
the world as scientific facts.

In the modern world people walk around with their eyes glued to little
screens, keeping themselves updated on the newest technology, with
religious fervor .

What exactly is the indication that humans now, with their advanced
knowledge of mathematics and physics, have understood the world and
their place in it, any better than people of former times, who
worshiped nature and various gods?

--but, but I have an Iphone, something a cave-dweller couldn’t even
dream of. And don’t you mind the climate-changes, that has nothing to
do with ignorance of how nature works. The Iphone in my hand is proof
that we have understood nature better than ever before.

Seriously?

Some years ago, WHO was asked by UN to issue a report on human health
in the new millennium. WHO published a report saying that the biggest
health crisis facing the world in the new millennium is that more and
more people will be born with mental ailments.

We are clearly not living in an evolved society of happy and satisfied
people, rather, more and more people need psychiatric treatment, and
the sales of various psycho-drugs are shooting though the roof.

This devolution of mankind, was predicted by the Vedic sages already
5000 years ago.

The sages say:

O learned one, in this iron age of Kali men have but short lives. They
are quarrelsome, lazy, misguided, unlucky and, above all, always
mentally disturbed. -- Srimad Bhagavatam, 1.1.10

The global culture has already made the whole world into one big
marketplace - a worldwide altar where technology is worshiped as the
new opium of the masses.

Being fed endless propaganda from Hollywood, where technology saves
the day, we quickly forget that technology, despite assurances to the
contrary, cannot save us from the onslaughts of nature. Time and time
again technology comes up short in the fight against nature.

Without a spiritual understanding of life, the consciousness becomes
entrapped in a world of matter, a perception of life where the
consciousness cannot see itself - a deception where the self, being
absorbed in matter, forgets itself.

And despite the fact that this is known by the most brilliant and
prominent scientists, still, science is being peddled to the masses as
some kind of infallible religion.

To save mankind from the dark whole of materialism into which it has
sunk, Vedic knowledge is more relevant and more needed than ever
before.

"Science cannot solve the ultimate mystery of nature. And that is
because, in the last analysis, we ourselves are a part of the mystery
that we are trying to solve."--Max Planck

"It seems to me pretty plain there is a third thing in the universe -
consciousness - which i cannot see to be matter, force or any
conceivable modification of either." --Biologist Thomas Huxley

"I regard consciousness as fundamental. I regard matter as a
derivative from consciousness. We cannot get behind consciousness.
Everything we talk about, everything we regard as existing, postulates
consciousness ." --father of modern day physics Max Planck

"We can admittedly find nothing in physics or chemistry which has even
a remote bearing on consciousness, yet all of us know there is such a
thing simply because we have it ourselves. Hence consciousness must be
part of nature or more generally reality. Which means that quite apart
from the laws laid down in quantum theory, we must also consider laws
of quite a different kind."--Nobel prize winner Niels Bohr

Dude, you give like, the worst pep talks ever.
Glad you think so, Cloudboy.
Nothing indicates that science one day will explain everything.
Nothing indicates it won't either. There's a lot of knowledge to be ahd, it will take a long time.

Science can’t even explain the most basic ingredient of existence,
namely consciousness, what to speak of everything. Science is no
closer to explaining everything than they were in stone-ages.
Because there is no instant answer doesn't mean we have not progressed.
We know much more than we did 100 years ago, or even 50 years ago.

The fact is that science has nothing sensible to say about life and
death.
That's your opinion. What is it you want o know?

Actually, the only thing science is good for is producing

technology, and when we live in a world where the general mass of
people are kept in awe and reverence of technological wonders, science
has become a most noble and sacred undertaking.
Because it's the best way to learn anything. The scientific method exists for a reason. Some of that technology helps to save lives every day. Ever hear of X-rays, MRI, CAT scans, Bone density scans? How about artificial valves? Hear/lung transplants, how do you think they came to exist? Science.

Evolution is accepted as a fact by science because in over 150 years there has been nothing but confirmation of the theory.

Because of science. You don't seem to grasp the fact that a bit of technology used for a purpose you find annoying, most likely has several other uses you might approve of. Whether or not you like the use of cell phones for entertainment, they are also phones and can be used to summon emergency help when needed, surely that's a benefit. They can also replace a computer for gathering information from multiple sources. It's part of the reason that religion is dying. Once folks are allowed to get access to different viewpoints and multiple sources of factual information, mythology becomes more about entertainment than worship. Once again, a benefit.

And don’t you mind the climate-changes, that has nothing to

Maybe you aren't, in fact it's kinda obvious.
Maybe we have better ways to identify those who need such medication.
Maybe doctors sometimes give prescriptions to shut people up or keep them from changing doctors.

You don't like the way the world works, we get that. You are not capable of communicating in any way that your religion is the solution to the world's problems. You really suck at it.

Posting to an atheist NG is a really pointless exercise.

Nobody here is going to convert to being dressed in salmon robes begging at airports for gods they don't believe in.

The living entity, in whatever species of life he appears, finds a
particular type of satisfaction in that species, and he is never
averse to being situated in such a condition. —SB 3.30.4
Jahnu, that is DEEP. How many years did you spend standing on your head, practicing self mortification by sleeping on a bed of nails and driving skewers through your flesh, and staring at your navel did it take to acquire such transcendent wisdom? Aum shanti indeed!!!

In the Vedic tradition, an evolution of consciousness is understood.
The soul, which is an atomic particle of God's consciousness, is
situated in all living entities. The human life-form is a extremely
rare occurrence for the soul. Every skin-cell in our body is a soul,
every piece of grass, every microbe, every bacteria is a soul, so we
can understand how rare it is for a soul to obtain a human body.

In the human body, the consciousness of the soul is sufficiently
evolved to understand God and its relation to Him. In all the other 8
million non-human species, the consciousness of the soul is limited to
the bodily needs of eating, sleeping, mating, and defending.
In the material world, the consciousness of the soul evolves gradually
from fish, plants, insects, reptiles, birds, animals and then to
humans (including demigods, rakshasas, gandharvas etc).

There are 900,000 species of aquatic life; 2,000,000 species of plants
and trees; 1,100,000 species of insects; 1,000,000 species of bird
life; 3,000,000 species of beasts, and 400,000 species of human life.

--Padma Purana

And then, finally, after having attained the human form of life, the
soul is given the opportunity for the the consciousness to evolve from
Sraddha to Prema, meaning an evolution from faith in God to love of
God. Obviously, to love God, one needs to know Him first.

One attains the human form of life after transmigrating through
8,400,000 species by the process of gradual evolution. That human life
is spoiled for those conceited fools who do not take shelter of the
lotus feet of Govinda. --Brahma-vaivarta Purana

In the science of bhakti (devotion to God) the consciousness evolves
through 9 stages:

1. sraddha - faith
2. sadhu-sanga - association with saintly people
3. bhajana kriya - following and practicing devotional principles
4. anartha nivritti - purifying the mind from material contamination
5. nistha - becoming steady in one's sadhana (practice)
6. ruchi - taste for Krishna
7. asakti - attachment to Krishna
8. bhava - the dawning of pure love of God
9. prema - pure, unalloyed love for Krishna

Krishna says:

After many births and deaths, he who is actually in knowledge
surrenders unto Me, knowing Me to be the cause of all causes and all
that is. Such a great soul is very rare. (Bg 7.19)

When one resents the demigods, who represent God, the Vedas, which
give all knowledge, the cows, brahmanas, Vaisnavas and religious
principles, and ultimately Me, the Supreme, he and his civilization
will be vanquished without delay. -- Srimad Bhagavatam 7.4.27

The thing on earth that nobody needs is suffering. Someone may say
that we need suffering in order to enjoy happiness, but in any case,
nobody wants suffering. No thinking person actively seeks out
suffering. Everyone is trying to minimize their distress and maximize
their enjoyment.

What few people know, however, is that the amounts of distress and
happiness we shall experience in life are already fixed at birth, so
there is no need to endeavor for either. Happiness and distress will
come to us automatically, according to our karma. The only endeavor
worth-while in the material world is to re-connect with our spiritual
source. Then and only then can we escape all suffering and taste the
eternal happiness for which we are always longing.

(Bg. 9.2)

Narada Muni says:

Persons who are actually intelligent and philosophically inclined
should endeavor only for that purposeful end which is not obtainable
even by wandering from the topmost planet [Brahmaloka] down to the
lowest planet [Patala]. As far as happiness derived from sense
enjoyment is concerned, it can be obtained automatically in course of
time, just as in course of time we obtain miseries even though we do
not desire them. -SB 1.5.18
