I'm curious about the rituals and practices of converting to different faiths.

Please name your religion/denomination and then describe the conversion process.

I am one of Jehovah's Witnesses. When we meet a potential disciple (i.e. someone who may be converted), we invite them to take a Bible study course outlining the principal doctrines of the Bible and beliefs of Jehovah's Witnesses. During their Bible study, student are encouraged to attend meetings of JWs at their local Kingdom Halls. The program usually lasts from six months to two years. In the end, the student will dedicate himself to Jehovah God, and symbolize this dedication by means of water baptism.

The key here is, "real scientists". Because scientists
who are not influenced by popular consensus know
that there is no proven mechanism for the "goo" to
become you. There is only a fantasized mechanism,
and fantasy is -not- "real science".

Thank you.

to *think* for yourself. Your question above is evidence
that you are not accustomed to do so. Thus are vulnerable

"thinking for yourself". The speed of

is, it is a known objective fact.

That's because the Devil is *temporarily* in
charge,

"The devil led him up to a high place and
showed him in an instant all the kingdoms
of the world. And he said to him, "I will
give you all their authority and splendor;
it has been given to me, and I can give it
to anyone I want to. If you worship me,
it will all be yours." ~ Luke 4:5-7

That was the Devil speaking the truth,
that he is in control of things 'at this time'.
But only on a very 'temporary' basis.

Jesus can deliver you from his power.

No problem for Him.

of the world. And he said to him, "I will
give you all their authority and splendor;
it has been given to me, and I can give it
to anyone I want to. If you worship me,
it will all be yours." ~ Luke 4:5-7
That was the Devil speaking the truth,
that he is in control of things 'at this time'.
But only on a very 'temporary' basis.
Jesus can deliver you from his power.
No problem for Him.
Why do you want to believe that?

The key here is, "real scientists". Because scientists
who are not influenced by popular consensus know
that there is no proven mechanism for the "goo" to
become you. There is only a fantasized mechanism,
and fantasy is -not- "real science".
Name three of these "real scientists".
The issue here has to do with whether or not you are able
to *think* for yourself. Your question above is evidence
that you are not accustomed to do so.
The above blatant and shameless non-response is rock solid
evidence of yet one one more evasion on the part of our Andrew.
Both he and you are -not interested- in truth.
So he, like you, will toss in a "red herring".
A tactic used by those who argue-->against truth.

Yes, we know life exist, and as you say..

Since that is true, it would be dishonest and
wrong to construct a *fantasy* and to declare
that THIS is how it happened. Thus confirming
the truth of the above statement of contention.

The state of the world does not reflect the
existence of an all everything good creator.
That's because the Devil is *temporarily* in
charge,
That "temporary" bit, according to the story they told you,
stretching from the first two humans up to all of mankind, into the future until
not even Jesus knows when.

Some God you have there, creating Lucifer and then giving
him carte blanche to toy with us as he willed.

Knowing even as He did so what the devastating results were going to be.

Clearly a part of His plan from the very beginning.

According to the story they told you.

But what is the "big picture"?
The big picture is that your God will be tossing countless billions of His own children
into the Lake of Fire, just as He knew perfectly well He would be doing,
knew all too well from even before creating Adam.

Just as He also knew full well He would be doing even as he set to creating the Tempter.

Again: undeniably His plan from the very start.

"He is not willing that any should perish"?

Obviously not the case. Not only is He entirely willing, He set it up that way from the get go.

Oh, I know the story they told you -- there are some of His own children He won't destroy.

Kind of like the fratricide who doesn't kill his entire family.

And you are content with that.

Thus are vulnerable to the deceptions that overtake
the gullible masses.
I have no idea how life began and you have no idea how
God began. The difference is we know life exists.
Yes, we know life exist, and as you say..
we have---> no idea how life began.

Why do you surrender yourself to him when it is not necessary?

Knowing even as He did so what the devastating results were going to be.
Clearly a part of His plan from the very beginning.
But what is the "big picture"?
God does not need a big picture because "God has infinite power."
God can have everything just as he wants it at all times.
God can remove all suffering while retaining and enhancing
our free will.
That would be true only if we always exercised our free will
in ways that did not result in suffering. His laws are given to
us for that very purpose, to prevent suffering.

You know, the one you admit is He left "in charge" here.

Quite similar to the way He set up Eve, giving her free will
and then sitting back to enjoy what He knew was aboutto happen.

Like I say: some God you got there.

Can't really blame him though, as God, Andrew's version of, did exactly as I described.

Gave us free will, and threw in a Devil He created especially for us, as a bonus.
You know, the one you admit is He left "in charge" here.
Quite similar to the way He set up Eve, giving her free will
and then sitting back to enjoy what He knew was aboutto happen.
Like I say: some God you got there.
So you accuse God, thus you will
share with the accuser, his fate.
"And the devil that deceived them
was cast into the lake of fire."
~ Revelation 20:10

Your points have all been rebutted by Jesus.
You mean, Jesus died for God's sins? So now God is
forgiven and allowed to go to heaven?

Well, unless those are top secret, like your "known laws of science"

Theists who use "free will" as an explanation for suffering remind me
of cruel parents who would allow their children to be run over by cars
in the street or burned by a hot stove or electrocuted by a wall
outlet in order to preserve the "free will" of those children.

I.e. "hey, don't stick that knife in the outlet!" vs. "let him stick
the knife in the wall outlet; anything else would involve taking away
the kid's freedom of choice!"

Tandy did, at least once, call himself a Naval Prosecutor, and
told us he attended U of I Law without bothering to tell us
he withdrew after 1 year: a "lie by omission."

[quote]

I attended Law school at the University of Illinois in
Champaign. You can check their records if you don't believe
me. I also practiced criminal law as a prosecutor in the Navy
for 4 years.

https://groups.google.com/forum/?hl=en#!original/alt.atheism/aod7Q3zB-b4/nYrs2c3fGWgJ

Note he didn't originally tell us he attended UofI Law for 1 year,
allowing those who don't read closely to assume he went the full 3.
"Lying by omission," the good faddas and sistas called it back when
I was in Catholic school.

Now, is it fair to claim being a non-JAG "legal officer" on
board ship to be "practicing law?" State bar associations
would probably say "no."

It's easy to deal with this, Tandy. Just say "I expressed that
incorrectly."

{/Quote}

I still say, that when one claims to have "practiced law," that is
an equivalent claim to "I am/was a lawyer."

Practicing law without a license is generally not permitted in
the US, though there are paralegals and some limited license
legal technicians in states like Washington. Since the Navy
would follow its own rules, under Federal, not state law, Tandy
doing what he did do was perfectly legal. He certainly wasn't a
JAG lawyer, though, or anything near it. And rules for non-lawyers
doing work that used to be the sole province of licensed lawyers have
loosened over the years. A paralegal may work in a law practice,
but isn't a full-fledged lawyer.

Again, the record has been corrected, but let's not forget that
Tandy tried to slide this past us, in a case of "claiming false
expertise," but got caught.

-------------------------------------------------------

Anybody who reads this can judge how truthful Tandy was on
this issue, before correcting the record.

I think it is plain that he was attempting to paint himself
with the authority of credentials he never had. That's
one man's opinion, of course.

Fairness is not the issue. The issue is "on charter". I told the truth. You distorted and misinterpreted it. The charter says nothing about putting words in anyone's mouth. You didn't call me "ridiculous". You called me dishonest and deliberately deceptive. Your ignorance of the law is showing. In this case, you are required to prove intent and you cannot.

Your ignorance of the law is showing. In this case, you are
required to prove intent and you cannot.
It isn't a legal matter. No one is reporting you to the state
bar. There wasn't any actionable harm, anyway. It is just a
matter of netiquette, which you totally lack, or you wouldn't
troll.

I'm curious about the rituals and practices of converting to different faiths.
Please name your religion/denomination and then describe the conversion process.
I am one of Jehovah's Witnesses. When we meet a potential disciple (i.e. someone \
who may be converted), we invite them to take a Bible study course outlining the
principal doctrines of the Bible and beliefs of Jehovah's Witnesses. During their Bible
study, student are encouraged to attend meetings of JWs at their local Kingdom Halls.
The program usually lasts from six months to two years. In the end, the student will
dedicate himself to Jehovah God, and symbolize this dedication by means of water
baptism.
Why would anyone want to become a stupid, deluded moron totally out of
touch with reality?

And here you are, presumably looking for "potential disciples" in an
atheist news group. You are quite welcome to any of our infesting
trolls who are more likely to have theistic beliefs to begin with than
our regular members. Getting the latter to sign up for six months to
two years of Bible study is something of a Sisyphean task, but I am
sure we'll find your efforts amusing.

I can't speak for the Christians on the subject of recruiting.
You atheists need not fear attempts by me at proselytizing. First, proselytizing has been illegal under Jewish law since 100AD.
I know what rabbis think on the subject of conversion. Most of them don't want to do it. The prevailing view among Orthodox rabbis is that people must be born into Judaism to satisfy their standards. They make few exceptions.

... "proselytize" also means:
"to advocate or promote a belief or course of action."

...and here you are nearly every day proselytizing for Mosus and The
Exodus ! We don't fear you though Arty...we just laugh at you !

It's plain that Tandy, while he isn't out looking for
"gentiles" to convert to Judaism, wants atheists to become
theists. I count that as proselytizing. He'd be a troll
just for that, but his abusive asshole persona would quaify
him anyway. Moderate forums wouldn't have him.

Using, of course, the most biased and inaccurate translation of the bible ever produced, the "New World" translation. It was translated by five men, four of whom did not know either Hebrew or Greek, and was "translated" to conform to the already extant JW theology. https://tinyurl.com/y8tpc877

Unless they see it for what it is, a particularly transparent brand of christian horseshit, and blow it off completely. I know a woman who recently stopped her fellowship and studies with the local JWs and went back to the Unitarian Universalist church, once she learned the facts about the JW bible.

Roman Catholic.

After making your desires known, a 6 month, once a week for an hour in scripture
reviews pertinent to Christianity and then the RCC, a few local Satruday
retreats, attending a weekend Mass once a week to become known by the regulars
on weekend Masses., a lot of good times and laughs. NO tests.

Conversion at the Easter Vigil where candidates are baptized if not already as a
Christian and the Confirmation Vows and a lot of welcome hand clapping..

I was a sponser for 4 candidates.

I'm curious about the rituals and practices of converting to different faiths.
Please name your religion/denomination and then describe the conversion process.
I was a sponser for 4 candidates.
..uh, don't you mean victims Earl ?
No, they volunteered.
...heh, heh..your church has a stretching rack, left over from the
inquisition, in its basement ?
No basement.

Wouldn't surprise me in the least !
I admit though...it's a novel method for increasing church
membership !
They come to us.
Well, that's just not true, Dork.

"After stabilizing in the mid-2000s, weekly church attendance among
U.S. Catholics has resumed its downward trajectory over the past
decade. In particular, older Catholics have become less likely to
report attending church in the past seven days -- so that now, for the
first time, a majority of Catholics in no generational group attend
weekly. Further, given that young Catholics are even less devout, it
appears the decline in church attendance will only continue. One
advantage the Catholic Church has is that the overall proportion of
Americans identifying as Catholic is holding fairly steady. However,
that too may not last given the dwindling Catholic percentage among
younger generations."

Check out the numbers for yourself, you deluded moron:
