Harris vs. Trump: More Republicans turn against Trump, poll shows. Here’s
how many

The latest national poll between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump shows the
Democratic hopeful making inroads with GOP voters as the November election
approaches.

The New York Times/Siena College poll showed Harris with 49% support
compared to Trump’s 46%. It’s the first time since July that Harris has
taken the lead in the presidential polls by The New York Times and Siena
College.

Last month, the NYT/Siena College poll showed the two candidates tied with
47% of support each. But now with just a month to go before the election,
Harris has garnered some momentum in the latest poll — including among GOP
voters.

Nine percent of Republican voters said they planned to vote for her, up
from 5% last month.

Geoff Garin, a Democratic pollster who worked as co-chief strategist for
part of Hillary Clinton’s 2008 presidential run, took to social media to
argue the bump is “an indication that the unprecedented number of high
profile Republicans opposing Trump are having an impact.”

Yet how much real influence Republicans long criticized by Democrats have
is unclear, especially given lingering raw feelings and Cheney’s polarizing
persona across decades in Washington.

The slight increase comes as the question of whether former staunch
conservatives — former Congresswoman Liz Cheney, her father, former Vice
President Dick Cheney and former attorney general under George W. Bush,
Alberto Gonzales — vocal support for Harris will matter in the election.

The endorsements crystalized the remarkable evolution of the Republican
Party’s establishment wing, which ruled Washington during the Bush years
only to be sidelined once Trump wrested control of the party. These
figures, once reviled by Democrats, are so alarmed by the prospect of the
former president’s return to power that they are prepared to oppose their
own party’s nominee for the White House.

Harris has embraced the backing of Republicans with whom she shares little
common ground and whose endorsement likely has more to do with opposition
to Trump than support of her policy positions. She frequently mentions that
more than 200 Republicans have endorsed her, and her campaign said in an
email playing up Gonzales’ backing that it welcomed into the fold “every
American – regardless of party – who values democracy and the rule of law.”
